can you play American PC games in Australia?

hawk

the game i want to bye is cod 6 will it work
the game i want to buy is cod 6

Answer
hi yes they will.
pc games DO NOT have regional restrictions like dvd movies. a pc bought in usa or anywhere will work anywhere in the world.
i like in uk and have often bought games from all round world and have never had a problem.
with the millions of computers around the world, it would be uneconomical for the manufactures and microsoft to try region protection on games.
ho ahead and buy the game and enjoy it, its a brilliant game but personally i preferred cod 4

Where can I buy Nancy Drew games for PC in Australia?

casio beck

I've been into them for so long but can't buy them anywhere. I know EB Games used to sell them, but not anymore. What shops have had them recently??

I live in Melbourne, Australia. Thanks.

Answer
Not sure about stores, but if you're willing, you can buy them directly off the Her Interactive website....they're the makers of the games, so it's pretty safe (I've done it twice) and you can download the game straight to your computer.

Buying a PC Gaming System HELP!!!!?

Seth

Hello, I am very much interesting in buying a gaming pc or laptop. I have never purchased a gaming pc before so i do not know the ins and outs like some of you gaming vets. But I have done some research and found building your own if the cheapest and most effective way since it is better in the end. So my question to you all is can you give me a build list or bundle that has everything i will need for some where close to 850 bucks? My goals are to play SKYRIM with super quality graphics and NO LAG. Furthermore, i kinda need some convincing on why i should spend all this money because for one game it seems impractical so can you also name some future games that will come out similar to skyrim or fun pc games.
Also, if there is a good gaming laptop that can reach my requirements and can almost match a pc or is a "GOOD" deal let me know also cause i play a lot of games at friends and it would be a convenience but since i can pack up a pc and bring it, i don't really care.

Thanks for your help :)

Answer
PC gaming really shines when playing first person shooters. If you like those it's the way to go. There's also a sense of community that you rarely find with consoles. The graphics are always better than consoles but if you want to be assured of playing Skyrim (or any of the other graphics rich titles) on Ultra settings with high frame rates (no lag), the gpu (graphics card) alone will cost 4 to 500 US. On your budget I'd lower the standards just a bit. You can build a smoking PC but you're not going to Max out every game's settings.

On the laptop side, I'd consider the Asus G series. A little over your budget but it's a true desktop replacement. I have an Asus G74sx purchased from Best Buy for 1200. When I'm at home, it's hidden under my desk and plugged into a 32 inch TV at 1080p (native resolution is 1600x900 but with HDMI it goes to 1080) with a gaming mouse and keyboard attached. It out performs the gaming desktop that my son built for himself.

Gaming computers for new games ?

Reilly

I have a hp probook 4510s and it's a bad laptop for gaming cause of the graphics card so I am contemplating a gaming pc I want to get a desk top. I was looking in the 600-800 dollar range I don't need tricked out computer costing me 1400 dollars.I want is to play diablo, swtor, battlefield, skyrim. on good graphics not in high or anything one that can run smoothly and have a good frame rate. So should I build one or can you give me a suggestion on a computer that I can order. Thanks for the help

Answer
Building a PC is more exciting. If you just want to buy one, something like this is tricked out and still in your price range. (just an example)

This thing would run all of the games very nice.

- Intel Core i5-2320 Quad-Core Processor

Which latest desktop computer is best for gaming under 30k?

Rohit

I want to gift the desktop to my elder brother. He loves gaming so plz tell me which will be the best choice upto 30000 INR ? :-)

Answer
Its a really tight budget to build a gaming PC. Going with Intel won't be a wise decision. Exact 30k is somewhat impossible to do.

CPU - AMD 3.3 GHz AM3 FX6100 Processor - Rs. 7399

MOBO - MSI 970A-G46 Motherboard - Rs. 5652

RAM - Corsair Vengeance DDR3 8 GB (2 x 4 GB) PC RAM - Rs.5000
(CMZ8GX3M2A1866C9R)

PSU - Corsair VS650 650 Watt PSU - Rs. 4116

GPU - Sapphire AMD/ATI HD 7770 1 GB - Rs. 8991
GDDR5 Graphics Card

HDD - Seagate Barracuda 500 GB Desktop Internal - Rs. 3318
Hard Drive (ST500DM002)

You may go for a cheap cabinet maybe 'Supercomp' starting price is Rs.600 (I use them too)

As I said a good gaming PC with price of 30k is really Impossibe!!!! But cheers its possible with more 5k! Well its your ELDER BROTHER'S BIRTHDAY, now its the right time to show your Brotherhood :D !

And yeah wish your brother a Happy birthday ! :D
Regards,
me

Good luck ! Happy Gaming

Buying advice

Apple makes a good quality laptop. The problem comes when it requires service or minor upgrades. It is near impossible to do anything with them. They even glue the battery and hard drive down so you can not change it. They solder the ram to the logic board so you can not increase it. They lock up most of the software so your stuck with what they approve.

Lenovo has serious stand behind their product problems. They bought IBM PC division and proceeded to drive the quality of the system into the ground. Their customer service is well below par. They even makes Dell customer service look good. The last and final thing to remember about them is they are a Chinese Government own company. It is up to you if you want to trust them.

Toshiba, Panasonic, Sony should be avoided because of their heavy modification of Windows and the drivers. If you remove some of the bloat they install, you can cripple the system.

Acer, Gateway, and eMachines should be avoided period. Low end system that are driving the race to the bottom.

Dell once made a good system and fell from grace. They are now struggling to regain their place in the market. Customer service is one of many problems with this company.

Alienware are glorified Dells and are more name then product. Priced extremely high for what you get. They do perform but you can get the same for less by looking around, just not packaged to be eye candy to the gamers.

Samsung has a history of using cheap parts in critical areas. Capacitors has been one area Samsung has a known history of going cheap, causing units to fail early. For that reason I would avoid them.

ASUS and HP do not modify Windows as bad as the other manufacturers. They have excellent build quality. They might add a lot of bloat but they also makes it easy to get rid of it.

Ultrabooks are the higher end of Wintel laptops but they have some of the same concerns as Apple. They make it next to impossible to change any hardware in them. Service of them will have to be done by the manufacturers. With most of them, you can not change your own battery or hard drive. They are designed to catch your eye but they are not any more special then other laptops except for the fact that they are slim or thin. Your paying for it being thin and slim. For the money your going to spend on it you can buy a much better laptop with more power.

Tablets are just toys to me. They can not handle the work load like Laptops and Desktops and do not have the storage capacity you will end up needing.

Hybrids are the worse of the worse. The flip or detachable touch screens are just a disaster waiting to happen.

Never buy an All In One. They are far worst then laptops of any kind to service and they have a higher failure rate. My experience with them are limited because the few I worked on made me think they were designed in such a way as it would take a blow torch and a jack hammer just to disassemble them.

Choose wisely.

League of Legends. It's a very popular game, and it's pretty cool.
Try it out:

(The link is a referall code of mine, if you don't want to use it, just go to http://eune.leagueoflegends.com/ and press "PLAY FOR FREE" at the top right corner. I'd be happy if you used it though.)

You need to download the game and create a user, but it's all free.

Is this pc adequate for gaming?

Hi, I was looking at building a new PC which I will use for medium games such as Counter Strike: GO, maybe BF4 and others. Mainly wanted to know if its a decent build and if the graphics card is al-right, thanks in advance.

Build:
Case: Thermaltake Commander MS-II Mid Tower Case
PSU: SilverStone Strider Essential Series ST50F-ES 500W Power Supply
CPU: Intel Core i5 4440 Quad Core LGA 1150 3.1GHz CPU Processor
RAM: Kingston ValueRam 8GB DDR3 1600MHz Memory KVR16N11/8
GPU: Gigabyte Radeon HD 7750 OC 2GB Video Card
HDD: Seagate 500GB Barracuda 3.5â 7200RPM SATA3 Hard Drive - ST500DM002
DISK: Samsung SH-224DB (BB) 24x Internal SATA DVD OEM Burner Drive
OS: Windows 7 Home Preium 64 Bit
My budget is around $600-$700 max

Answer
Missing a motherboard. Ratio of CPU cost to graphics cost is not optimized for gaming. Gaming performance is based on the graphics card unless bottlenecked by a weak CPU. HDD is small by today's standards. PCPARTPICKER.com helps with shopping and compatibility.
Your list is considered an entry level of gaming for 2013 with high upgradability because of the powerhouse CPU in comparison to a mid-level graphics card. That is even low among HD 7750's as it is a DDR3 RAM card. Low performance on the ram also. That is a 1x8GB, and ram runs better in pairs.
It is also a CAS 11, though supposed to be programmable.
Still meets BF4 medium settings
http://www.game-debate.com/games/index.php?g_id=3060&game=Battlefield+4&p_make=Intel&p_deriv=Core+i5-4440+3.1GHz&gc_make=ATI&gc_deriv=Radeon+HD+7750+Gigabyte+OC+2GB+DDR3+Edition&ram=8&checkSubmit=#systemRequirements
http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/535

You can get a more balanced build of much higher performance at a lower price.
You choose between an i3 for later upgrade to i5, or an AMD FX-6300 for example and with a better CPU cooler can overclock to FX-6350. It is a bit top ended as a CPU but matches an i5 in non-gaming and is an adequate gaming CPU at a much lower price. The motherboard would be different.

It is good enough for Counterstrike GO
http://www.game-debate.com/games/index.php?g_id=2323&game=Counter-Strike%3A+Global+Offensive&p_make=Intel&p_deriv=Core+i5-4440+3.1GHz&gc_make=ATI&gc_deriv=Radeon+HD+7750+Gigabyte+OC+2GB+DDR3+Edition&ram=8&checkSubmit=#systemRequirements

Gaming performance of what you show is beat by a finished $580 system
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883258007
That graphics card you show only shows for sale at a big premium price of $94. Performance match at $70: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121633
It is beat by $80 cards.

Can't find that case in stock in major US sources. I am now guessing you are in Australia and not sure where you are getting your parts.

Need help with building a PC?

i am trying to build a gaming pc. but i do not know the specs i need and how to piece them together.
can some link me parts that i should buy and a video on how to build
BUDGET: 800-900
Desired GAMES TO PLAY: BATTFIELD AND COD
i wish to play all these games on ultra if possible

Answer
This is pretty good, and building a PC is easy. The hardest part may be connecting everything to the motherboard.
These parts will run all games pretty smoothly, and will fit your budget.

Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129066 It's a pretty good and stylish case for it's price
Motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168131
31637 It's a pretty good mobo. Supports SLI too if you want to add another 560/
Video Card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130610 It is a VERY POWERFUL card without going ridiculous on the price. It will run all games smoothly until est. 2013 - Q3 2014.
RAM: 4GB is enough but 8 should cover multitasking. Try to find 1333Mhz.
Power Supply: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139024 It's a very good power supply. Corsair makes very good quality PSUs, and is enough to power everything.
Processor: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103934

I know I didn't list other parts, so you have find those yourself.
I recommend getting extra fans or water cooling if you want to keep your system stable.

These parts will play Battlefield 3 on max settings smoothly, other games too.

What is a good gaming PC?

Zack

I'm looking to get a gaming PC because the new Xbox sucks and I'm not a PS fan. So I'm looking for a good PC. I've never had one so I don't know much about them. What is a good but cheap PC. I'm willing to pay $1000 if I have too but would like to avoid that. Any help is great. Thank you!

Answer
The gaming Pc is the one you build for yourself. You'll save hundreds of dollars building it yourself. They're real easy to build also. Go to youtube and find a video how to build one and a video quoting "gaming pc for $1000 2013". To show what parts to buy. Already built gaming pc are pretty much a rip off.

Gaming PC Parts for Most Steam Games!?

Pipton

In February 2013 I am planning on buying PC parts for a gaming computer. I want the computer to play most of the games on steam. Probably the most graphic game im going to play is Black Ops I. But if I decide to get something better I just want it to be REALLY good.

What I am looking for in my PC:

I would like 4 USB ports so I can plug in my keyboard, mouse, and any other equipment I decide to get. I need to have the outputs for my mic so yeah.

I would like 3.3GHz or better.

A Graphics card that can play most games on steam.

and a case WITH OUT LED LIGHTS THAT ARE UNNECESSARY
And well you get the point I want really good specs and such.

Now to finish it up I only have 640$ but I would like a little left over. I would pay at least 200$ more or so, so I could Get what I want and I could still save up. SO thanks a bunch Cya!

Answer
Best suggestion I can give to you is the budget build on this website

Is this a good gaming PC?

Aivar

I'm gonna buy a gaming PC. And I wanna make sure that it's a good one. The guy who's gonna make it for me is assuring me that it will run any game on max. But I just wanna make sure it will rung games on medium-high.

PC:

Motherboard: MSI B85-G43 VGA HDMI DVI 4xUSB3.0 CrossFire ATX

Processor: INTEL CORE I7 4770

Ram: RAM DDR3-16GB 1600MHz CL10 KIT (2x 8GB ) Kingston HyperX

Disc: SSD 6,4cm (2,5") 120GB SATA3 Kingston V300 7mm 450/450MB/s

Graphics card: nVidia GF GTX760 2GB DDR5 Palit Jetstream 2xDVI HDMI DisplayP

Hard drive: 2TB SEAGATE SV35 SATA-3

Cooler: SCYTHE MUGEN 3 3100

ENERGON 750W

Tell me is it good or bad
I forgot to mention. I have a maximum budget of 1400â¬.

Answer
First things first - it won't "run any game on max". For example, Crysis 3 will be at medium, maybe high (but nowhere near max) settings at 1080p. The 760GTX is a mid-range graphics card, and even GTX Titans can't run Crysis 3 at max settings at a good framerate.

It's not a well planned gaming build.
For gaming, you should ALWAYS spend more on your GPU (graphics card) than on your CPU (processor) - usually, spending 1.5x as much on the GPU. This "gaming" build has a very expensive, high-end, i7, but a cheaper, mid-range 760GTX.
I would downgrade CPU to an i5, and upgrade GPU to a 770GTX.

16Gb is way more memory than you need for gaming. No gaming will use more than 6Gb, most of the time it will be below 4Gb.

that power supply (Energon 750w) is a lump of junk. NEVER go cheap on your PSU - the budget ones don't have the necessary protection circuits inside, are generally cheaply put together, and have a tendency to blow-out. And when they go, they can take out your other, more expensive, components. Get a branded 500w or 600w supply from Corsair, Enermax, Seasonic, Antec, or other well regarded manufacturer.

The motherboard and the processor don't allow overclocking - if that's something which interests you. And if you aren't overclocking, you don't really need an aftermarket CPU cooler (the Scythe Mugen)

Building a pc... Need advice...?

Answer
Ron Sicat here

Nice! Gaming PC's are awesome.

I'm an I.T. Specialist/Gamer just to let you know ahead of time.

First things first. How much are you willing to spend? You always wanna keep that in mind because when shopping for parts, specially for a gaming rig, you don't want second tier gear if you're a hardcore gamer.

But your configuration isn't bad.

The Intel E7400 series is arguably one of the easiest processor to work with when overclocking is in mind. But heat is it's downfall when the speed is being cranked up. Don't get me wrong, some people have cranked this thing to 4GHz stable "holy shizznits". If you are planning to overclock this bad boy, buy an excellent cooling system to back it up. But as a general rule of thumb, overclocking shortens the life of your hardware and can lead to it's death if you are not prepared or have no real experience doing it.

As far your motherboard goes, I'm gonna assume that it's the Intel P45 chipset. This motherboard is not bad at all. MSI is pretty good on providing overclockers enthusiast with tools such as a built in easy to use interfaces in the bios or software wise in Windows. Though majority of mobos manufacturer are now doing this. The Intel P45 chipset is where this board stands out. It supports up to a whopping 16GB of memory and can support multiple LGA-775 CPU's all the way to the Core 2 Quads and Extremes meaning this board will last you because it's upgradeable. There's really no cons about this board. It just depends on your budget.

As far as memory goes, it doesn't matter nowadays what memory company to go with. What matters is the speed of the memory both clock and latency, and the amount you need to get. I say for a gamer, 2GB is the bare minimum nowadays to keep up with future games. One of my gaming rigs has this setup:

CPU: Intel Pentium D 2.8GHz
CPU Cooling: Cooler Master Copper Core Silent
Motherboard: Asus P5LD2 Intel A-Life Chipset
RAM: 2GB Dual Channel DDR2 533Mhz
GPU: Nvidia XFX Geforce 9600GT 512MB
Sound: Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS
Optical: NEC DVD-RW Drive
PSU: Thermal Take 430w Silent Series
Monitor: Dell 20" SP2008WFP LCD
Case: Aspire Black w/ 2 80mm Fans 1 Front and 1 Back

One might look at my setup to be a mere performer, but don't underestimate it, it's a beast inside. In real time benchmarking and performance, this computer is really the minimum of where someone needs to be if you are a hardcore gamer on a budget. This setup alone with no overclocking can play any games I throw at including the infamous Crysis. I don't just run any games either, I run Call of Duty 4, Call of Duty World at War, Fallout 3, Grid and FIFA09 and I play them on a whopping resolution 1680x1050 with all settings turned all the way up. Except Crysis, but I can run it on High Settings with an average frame rate of 34fps and up.

All in all, you seem to be good to go. But please, don't get Vista. It is not worth to go Direct X 10 and loose a pretty good amount of frame rates. Windows 7 is coming but not too soon although with my testing and experimentation of the RC1 release, it handles games a whole lot better than Vista. Almost like Windows XP but with the Vista look and feel.

As far as your videocards goes, unless you are a die hard ATI supporter, the best bang for your buck is the Nvidia Geforce 9600GT in any configuration. This card is comparable to an 8800GS and out performance anything in its class. You can get one at newegg.com for $89 bucks, although sad to say I got mine for $169 when it first came out. This card is so amazing of a performer for the money. But I'm only recommending it if you are on a budget and you want a kick ass GPU that wont hold back on settings.

If you need more info or got questions, I got tons of suggestions and answers.

Help with gaming pc!?

Juan camil

Hello.
I have a simple question, I want to buy a new gaming computer and I have around 1000 dollars for the pc, but I don't know if I should order a custom computer in webpages like Cyberpowerpc, Ibuypower and others or buy my own pc components on amazon and build it, but I have no experience doing that and I don't know if it is worth to buy the components and build it my self.

Answer
Well, building a computer is a lot easier than you'd think if you take a little time to learn the basics. It is definitely worth it to build it yourself.
Why?
- You'll learn about the parts of a computer and how to build one.
- You'll be able to spend your money on better hardware than you get with a pre built.
- Generally, even pre built computers advertised for gaming have low-mid end graphics cards that do not max newer modern games. So they will run but not always the smoothest or with the best visuals.

So here's what you should look into watching to get a good idea of everything first:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lPIXAtNGGCw (The Basics of parts)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_56kyib-Ls (How to build)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hWsYKW-dRXU (A different, shorter how to build video)

NeweggTV has great videos! However, there are tons of other good videos on YouTube that can teach you everything you need to know. And there are lots of places online like Computer forum boards where people can answer any questions you may have.

This all may seem overwhelming but it is definitely worth it in the end, believe me.

Now here is a gaming build that I listed for your budget:

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/bOc5

A few points:

- If you already have Windows 7 64-bit use that extra $100 to upgrade to a 7970 graphics card.

-You don't have to buy from these vendors, it's just a list but I do suggest shopping where it's cheapest. For example: Amazon usually has Hard Drives and DVD Drives cheaper than Newegg, etc.

-For a DVD drive you don't have to get exactly what I listed just get what is cheapest from where you're buying ($17-18 Lite-On, Sony, Asus, it's all good)

Video Card brand typically doesn't matter either, what matters is the numbers, ex) 7850. Just see which is the cheapest and still has good reviews.

I know this is long dude, but I hope this helps

Building a Gaming Pc?

Hello i was just wondering what some of the options today for about $2100 in building your own gaming pc....

Answer
You can build your own super gaming rig for that kind of money. If used wisely you can build the equvilant of a 4 to 5 thousand dollar computer from a boutique computer vendor. Processor is your fist concern. I would not touch anything with less than 2 cores. A dual core processor will out perform a single core cpu on most new games and applications. Next is going to be the videocard. The rest is what you would like to use. I will speck out a great gaming system for you.

quad core cpu (4 processor cores) $294.00
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115017

Asus SLI gaming motherboard $299.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131074

Ram (Memory) 2GB $90.00
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231098

Video Cards nvidia 8800gts 2x$279.00= $558.00
(2 for sli video processing) If you want you could buy just one to start and then upgrade later.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130082

Hard drive(s) $110.00
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136073

DVD Burner $75.00
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827249020

Case $110.00
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811103010

Power Supply (SLI) $130.00
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817189008

Floppy Drive $7.00
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16821152005

Total $1673.99

This config will save you about $400 off of what you were planing to spend. You will need to buy a copy of Windows. I would go with Vista ultimate. You are top of the line here and will be able to run all direct x 10 games at high settings. You could take this to a computer shop and have them build it for you. I would rather build it myself, they will upcharge you on the prices and a fee for assembly. I still think that you would come in close to your budget if you had it built.

Hope this helps

Eric

so i'm on a $700 budget and a gaming desktop that can hold diablo 3, skyrim, counterstrike, all call of duty, and at least be able to hold bf3 or graphic setting high or up and remember i am on a 700$ budget so god luck on helping me find one
so i stuttered up there and i want* ( not and a) sorry for the confusion

Answer
So, I'm assuming you're building your own gaming PC (always a smart move. Best way to do it)

Anyhow, the three most important things to remember are Graphics Card, RAM, and Processor. These three components are the most important to gaming. That being said, here are three computer builds (2 AMD, 1 Intel) that are solid gaming machines and are $700 or below:

AMD:

http://www.omfgnetwork.com/2012/omfg-network-amd-copper-build-2/
http://www.omfgnetwork.com/2012/omfg-network-amd-bronze-build/

Intel:
http://www.omfgnetwork.com/2012/omfg-network-bronze-build/

Also for reference, here is a complete guide to choosing your computer components: http://www.omfgnetwork.com/computer-buyers-guide/

For $700, you can actually build a solid gaming PC. But whatever you do, just remember to not skimp (if possible) on the Graphics Card, RAM, or Processor.

Good luck, I hope this helps!

My First Gaming PC :)?

Mustafa

After being a STANDARD PC user since 1990 I have finally decided to build my very first Gaming PC though my wife says that I am too old for that - I am 34 now. So need some guidence.

In Processor I got the following choices:

INTEL CORE 2 QUAD 2.40Ghz (8MB CACHE - 1066 MHZ FSB) INTEL XEON QUAD CORE 2.00 GHZ (12MB CACHE - 1333MHZ FSB).
Both comes in my limited budget.

Also if you guys can suggest suitable motherboard, RAM (thinking about 4GB DDR2), Graphic Card, Sound Card etc. then it will be awesome.
I am really grateful to all the people who replied to my questions, I do want to select every answer as best answer but sadly I am not allowed for that, thanks.

Answer
Well, since you're on a budget, here's what I suggest. I think that you should actually get a different processor. Quad core isn't as good when it's below 2.4 GHz compared to Core 2 Duos.

Low End
Processor - 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo E7200
Heatsink and Fan - Zalman CNPS9500 LED
Motherboard based on the Intel P45 chipset (ie. Intel P45 Socket 775 ATX Audio PCI Express Gigabit LAN USB 2.0 SATA RAID eSATA)
Hard Drive - Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD6400AAKS 640 GB
Memory - 4 GB DDR2 800 MHz RAM (Corsair XMS2 or OCZ HPC Reaper series)
Video Card - Radeon 4850 or GeForce 9800 GTX+ (512 MB or 1 GB, your call; If you decide to get the Radeon, makes sure that you get the card from a manufacturer that offers a 3rd party coolers as the originals are horrible)
Sound Card - Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer
Optical Drive - Samsung Lightscribe DVD Burner SH-203N
Power Supply - 700 Watt or Higher

Medium End
Processor - Intel Core 2 Duo E8500
Heatsink and Fan - Thermalright Ultra 120 eXtreme
DX38BT Motherboard (look at the nVidia 700 series if you want to SLi)
Hard Drive - Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD6400AAKS 640 GB
Memory - 4 GB DDR2 1066 MHz RAM (Reaper HPC Edition 4GB PC2-8500 DDR2 DIMM Dual Channel Memory Kit)
Video Card - GeForce GTX 260 or Radeon 4870
Sound Card - Creative X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Professional or Asus Xonar DX 7.1
Optical Drive - Samsung Lightscribe DVD Burner SH-203N
Power Supply - 850 Watt or Higher (recommend BFG ES 800 Watt PSU)

High End
Processor - Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650 or the new i7 cores...but I wouldn't get those atm, WAY to overpriced and 3.0 GHz quad from Intel (can overclock to 3.5 GHz) should last a while
Heatsink and Fan - Thermalright Ultra 120 eXtreme
Motherboard - NVIDIA nForce 790i Ultra SLI or Gigabyte GA-X48-DQ6 Intel X48
Hard Drive - Western Digital VelociRaptor
Memory - 4 GB DDR3 1600 MHz RAM (recommend OCZ Reaper HPC 4 GB kit; you can upgrade to 8 GB if you have 64 Vista)
Video Card - GeForce GTX 260 SLI (x2/x3) or Radeon 4870 X2 (You can get 280 GTX if you want, but atm, price not worth it; though it does save you multi GPU problems)
Sound Card - Asus Xonar D2X 7.1
Optical Drive - Samsung Lightscribe DVD Burner SH-203N
Power Supply -1000 Watts or Higher (recommend Enermax Galaxy 1000 Watt DXX PSU or BFG 1000 Watt Power Supply)

Enjoy :D

I get like 40-50 fps at battlefield 3 on low settings. I bought the pc used. It was assembled 6 months ago.
I have updated my video drivers. What other drivers should i update?

Answer
Your gaming pc isn't simply a Processor and video card. You have hard drives which become fragmented, you have drivers that become old and don't support features added in game updates, you have dust that clogs fans and keeps components from working optimally...

I have similar specs, FX-8120, 16gb ram, radeon HD7850 and I play BF3 on ultra settings on 5040x1050 resolution...and I get no lag what so ever.

Of course, I clean my PC every couple of months.

Gaming graphics card ?

Jeff

I have a brand new pc that I built and I have a built on hs radeon 4200 graphics card but I can only play games at 640x400 cause it lags to much

And I was wondering what graphics card would be the best for games like mafia 2.. ghost warrior and call of duty. My price range is between 100 to 200 hundred cheaper the better

Pc specs
Asus motherboard with pcie 2.0 M4A785-M
Amd phenom II 955 black edition CPU
450 watt psu but will upgrade
4 gb 800 ddr2 RAM

Thanks

Answer
hi jeff
you have built a excellent pc up to now and as you have stated the intergrated radeon HD4200 graphics are pretty abysmal.... however with a budget of between £100 and £200 there are a few cards i would recommend with the first one being the "Asus HD 6850 1GB GDDR5 OC Graphics Card "( http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Graphics+Cards/ATI+6000+Series/ATI+Radeon+6850/Asus+HD+6850+1GB+GDDR5+OC+Graphics+Card+-+(EAH6850+DC/2DIS/1GD5/V2)+?productId=42291) .... for the price this is a extremely powerful card and has some excellent specifications... these include a 790mhz core clock and 1gb of gddr5 memory clocked at 4000mhz effective.... throw in a 256bit memory interface and 960 stream processors and you have a card that will run mafia 2 and call of duty black ops at high detail and resolution
the next card is the "MSI GeForce GTX 560Ti Twin Frozr II OC 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card"( http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Graphics+Cards/Nvidia+GTX+500+Series/nVidia+GTX+560+Series/MSI+GeForce+GTX+560Ti+Twin+Frozr+II+OC+1024MB+GDDR5+PCI-Express+Graphics+Card+?productId=43660 ).........this has a 880mhz core clock and 1gb of gddr5 memory clocked at 4200mhz ddr effective.... theres 384 stream processors and a 256bit memory interface... however this card runs alot cooler than previous nvidia high end cards.... and the twin frozr cooler is one of the best and most efficent gpu coolers around...
either of these cards will be ok however you may have to upgrade your psu to a 550w model...... but dont worry, this wont cost the earth... you can get the "Corsair Builder Series 600CX Power Supply"( http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Power+Supplies/650W+or+less/Corsair+Builder+Series+600CX+Power+Supply+?productId=42488 ) for just £53 and this will power both these cards without any problems... theres also a strong single +12v rail that will power the card and all your other components in your pc,and being corsair you know you are getting quality hardware !
i hope this helps jeff, any questions let me know
good luck mate !

Can someone explain PC game graphics card requirements to me?

Z D

I can understand RAM or CPU requirements, there's a number, if my computer's number is higher Im good. But I don't understand graphic cards. It seems to be determined by it's model, and some graphics card with more memory are worth than others with less? How do i know if my computer's graphics card can run a game?

Answer
Check the specification to run the game and see if your computer can play the game. How you can tell a high end card from low, I'll start with the ATI graphics card. ATI unlike its counterpart, NVIDIA has four numbers like ATI HD 6950 or something like that.

The first # - which is 6 tells the generation of the card
The 2nd # - I forgot, but I remember the higher the number, the better.
The 3rd # - Usually the same with the second, the higher, the better.
The 4th # - Usually just stays a 0

For Nvidia card - We'll use NVIDIA GTX 580

The first # - which is 5, indicates the gen of the card
the 2nd # - which is an 8, the higher the better the better performance the card but more expensive. Same goes with ATI brand
the 3rd # - is usually a 0.

There are also Video Ram 1 gb, 2 gb etc. The higher the better but more expensive. There are also different type of memory

gaming desktop for 800$?

Asmira

Hi! I was wondering if it was possible to find a good, complete (with mouse, keyboard, speakers, monitor, etc.) pc for gaming at 800$ can. Crysis doesn't have to work though but other games yes. Suggestion of building it myself can't be considered. ^^
Any suggestions? Thank you!

Answer
Ech. Though I'm reluctant to suggest ANY computer under $800 for gaming, you will absolutely be able to find a good deal using the little-known Dell Outlet store here: http://www.dell.com/content/products/category.aspx/xpsdt?c=us&cs=22&l=en&s=dfh

As of this moment there's a perfectly acceptable gaming system for $750 here: http://outlet.us.dell.com/ARBOnlineSales/topics/global.aspx/arb/online/en/InventorySearch?c=us&cs=22&l=en&lob=DIM&MODEL_DESC=XPS%20210&s=dfh

What is a good gaming desktop for under 800?

Matt R

I'm looking for a decent gaming computer for cheap. I need something that comes with a monitor, that comes with dedicated video memory and a good processor. I have been looking around and it seems that the cheapest computer out there that looks decent is Acer. I heard that Acers are crap, though. Anyone know? I'm not a huge fan of Dell's Inspirons, but I do like HP. Also I hate AMD processors. I'm looking for Intel's Core 2 Duo, or Core 2 Quad.

Answer
Umm have you ever considered just making your own desktop? That way you can get what you want and will probably get the best deal since few companies will offer gaming rigs at reasonable prices. You can try ibuypower or cyberpowerPC but building it yourself if your best bet.

You could also look into barebone kits where they do all the hard stuff by finding the compatible RAM, mobo, cpu. All you need to install are the HDD, optical drive, and video card which is really easy. Here's a list of ones powered either by a Core 2 Duo or Core 2 Quad. (Ignore the ones under $300)

mac or pc for college?

Hello,
I'm going to college next year and I was wondering if I should get a pc or mac. I'm not really sure what I want to major in, but most likely something that has to do with medical. I'm also not a very computer knowledgeable person. I'm just use my computer for facebook, tv, music, researching, and typing. None of the film making or movie producing or gaming things. However, I have a really bad habit of getting virus, and that's one of the reason why I kind of want a mac.I got a virus last year around sept, and this year during sept I got another virus. I have the virus protection thing and everything but I still get viruses. So I had to rebooted my computer twice within one year. And I also don't know that much about programing; i heard that macs wont take many of the window programs and a lot of the programs are run on windows. I just want a computer that wouldnt cost me so much problems and that I can download whatever it is that I need for school. Also, if you think that a pc is a better choice for me, then what kind of pc would you recommend?
Thank You

Answer
PC and dual boot with Linux (easy and FREE to do)

PC=Variety of specs, options, quality, prices, vendors, support
Mac=One vendor, limited options, still more expensive. Look below for more information..

Today, Macs use a subset of PC hardware. Why spend extra to get the same CPU chips, graphics cards and OS X isn't as secure as you think..

Don't believe the lies that Macs are better than PCs at graphics/animation.. Dreamworks Animation http://www.dreamworksanimation.com/ under studio click on Technology of Animation, an independent film maker I know uses PCs, a graphic artist I used to know uses PCs also.

A number of PCs can also run OS X (Mac OS) http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=os+x+on+pc&btnG=Google+Search&aq=0&oq=os+x+on+ as well just that Apple makes it illegal in order to get Market share.. The reason why Mac can run native Windows is because it is using a subset of PC hardware,

If you decide to buy a Mac for running Windows, you will still have to get the same virus/spyware protection, and run into the same issues as a regular PC.

Now is a Mac worth buying for OS X?

I say: NO... for the following reasons...

QUALITY/PROBLEMS
Contrary to belief, Macs are not better quality. Apple also has been changing suppliers to try to "lower the price" and thus lowering quality. Even with the lower prices, Macs still cost more, they spend a higher percent of budget trying to make it look pretty, and marketing.

Sample of problems: Overheating Macbooks, OS X- not responding to keyboard, some units with 16bit screens, etc. Apple statistics are misleading since Mac users with problem machines are more likely to go out and buy a new computer than PC users. Apple is lowering prices which means you can expect lower quality than in the past. Apple had switched the manufacturers producing parts. OS X also has problems slowing down.

Repairs are more expensive than PCs since the IMac, Mac Mini are compact units, and Apple charges a premium for their services. Some repairs can be done by another repair service but the compact design of the computer causes problems.
With an IMac, if the problem is with the monitor, the whole computer would have to be brought in.
IMac and Mac mini lack expansion.

VIRUSES
Mac OS X has viruses (and significantly on the rise), a friend of mine has a virused Mac. As more users use Macs, more viruses will come out for it. Especially when users think "they are safe".

http://www.macsimumnews.com/index.php/archive/poll_have_you_noticed_an_increase_in_malware_viruses_etc_on_your_mac/

SECURITY
Mac OS X was hacked in 2006 less than 30 minutes, and within 2 minutes in a contest in 2008, and within 10 seconds in 2009. In 2008, Linux and Vista were not hacked until another day when restrictions were lowered. Vista was next, and then Linux. In 2009 Windows 7 fell shortly after the Mac but Linux was unscathed.
Macs are standardized with Cameras, if your Mac gets hacked, the hacker can turn on your camera with more ease.
Please Note: All OS's have vulnerabilities.

PRICE
A similar equipped PC is much cheaper to purchase than Mac. Lets use Dell (but you can compare with another PC Brand if you like)

**(LAPTOP)
Dell Inspiron Laptop Starting Price: $500
Ending Price: $500
15" Screen
CPU: 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo [5% slower]
Graphics: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X4500HD [Not as good/fine for general use[
Memory: 3GB DDR2 SDRAM [75% of ram)
Hard Drive: 320GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm (same)

Cybperpower Notebook Xplorer X5-2900 Starting Price: $755
Ending Price After upgrades (not including 5% rebate): $860
15" Screen

Hard Drive: (upgrade to) 320GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm (+$5) [LARGER HARD DRIVE]
http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/system/Xplorer_X5-2900_Notebook/detail

Macbook Starting laptop Price: $1000
Ending Price After Upgrades: $1200
13" Screen (SMALLER)
CPU: 2.1GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (SLOWER)
Graphics: Nvidia GFORCE 9400 256MB
Memory: (upgrade to) 4GB DDR2 SDRAM (SAME)
Hard Drive (upgrade to) 320B Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm (SAME)
http://store.apple.com/us/configure/MC240LL/A?mco=NjcxMTQ3Ng

**(DESKTOP)

PLEASE NOTE: I compare Apple Mac's vs Dells best deal. If you really want an all-in one the Dell all-in-one has more ram, wireless keyboard and mouse and equivalent to $400 for free making the Imac still more expensive when you matching specs. Personally I don't think the All-in-Ones are a good choice, and consider them overpriced, lack expandability and repairs both more expensive and require the entire computer.

PS: Apple knows that they need to make Macintosh look different than PC so all Macs except the Mac Pro will not have a tower option. Apple's low end lacks expandability but it makes the Mac "look different", if Mac had a tower for low-end, more people would realize the similarities between the two.

Dell: ($700)
CPU: 2.33 GHZ Dell Inspiron QUAD (4 Processor) CORE
SCREEN: 20inch Screen
MEMORY: 4GB Ram
HARD DRIVE: 500 GB hard Drive
OPTICAL DRIVE: 16x DVD/CD Read/Writer
GRAPHICS: ATI Radeon HD 512MB
http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?oc=dddwra4&c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&kc=desktop-inspiron-537s

The Mac Mini since it has no monitor, keyboard, mouse, very skimpy on options and setup and is not the best deal... The IMac is better price than the Mac Mini.

IMac ($1300)
CPU: 2.4 GHZ DUAL (2 Processor) CORE (SLOWER CPU)
SCREEN: 20inch Screen
MEMORY: (upgrade to) 4GB Ram (SAME)
HARD DRIVE: (upgrade to ) 320 GB hard Drive (LESS HARD DRIVE)
OPTICAL DRIVE: 8x DVD Reader/Writer (1/2 speed)
GRAPHICS: Nvidia Geforce 9400M (APPROX SAME BUT LESS MEMORY GAPHICS)

whats the best pc game ever?

JackJumped

I was wondering what the best PC game is.

Answer
Games also have their Genre. If you can change the question then mention which one you want to know. Like FPS, RPG, Strategic, etc

For me Call of Duty Series in FPS and Skyrim/Mafia 2 in RPG.

will pc games ever look like ps4 and xbox one?

Johnleeguy

i'm getting a pc and ps4 but i noticed that killzone is the best looking game out their, like how the son is so graphic and how the frame rate is perfect now i'm getting a pc that is better than the ps4 but will the son and frame look perfect like the consoles if i do everything right?

Answer
Most pc games will look better than their console counterparts. And killzone shadow fall would look just as good if not better on a gaming pc if they made a pc version (which they won't).

What is a suitable value for money gaming PC?

jec_6152

Need advice for a decent & affordable gaming PC setup. I don't really care about high definition, resolution, pixels, etc. As long as I can play the latest games (MW3, BF3, LA Noire, etc.) without any lags.

Do I really need a 3GB graphics card or would a 1GB card suffice? Also, there's a lot of 1GB card out there with variable prices. Any differences between a cheap one & a not so cheap one?
Some other details I'd like to get advices on:
- AMD vs Intel (is i5 good enough?)
- ATi vs GeForce
- single or dual card (SLI/Crossfire)
- a good sound system & speakers
- a decent monitor, not necessarily HD

Answer
A 1GB card is enough.

Affordable is a bit of a stretchable given, as a few things depend on your budget of course.

Decent video card for a very decent price is the ATI 6870 (best value for money card), starting at around $140 at NewEgg
A decent P67 mobo would set you back between $60 and $80.

An intel i5 2400 goes for $190

RAM is dirt cheap and for $50 you have 8GB of DDR3 RAM @1600MHz

A good ventilated case should cost no more than $90

A 600 watt power supply can be had for around $80

The difference between a cheap 1GB card and a more expensive one usually sits in the second digit of the card's numbering...

For instance, there's NVidia's 5xx family, with a GTX560ti going for around $250 to $300, while a GT520 would be below $100. Both have 1GB of V-RAM, but the latter is a low level card while the former is a top notch one...

The second digit always indicates the "power" (or lack of) a card has...

As such, for example, a GTX260 would fare better than a GT520 by a serious margin.

I know the graphics card is no good but if it's a good pc I will buy one to install my self the pc is 480 pounds just to play games of steam and things like that

thank you :-)

Answer
Yeah thats about what I paied for my PC, and yours is actually a bit better then mine, what with having more RAM and a slightly petter processor, and I got mine at a good deal. 480 pounds (about $750 in usd) is a pretty good deal i'd say. Yeah the graphics card isnt good at all, about for about 100~200 you can get a pretty decent one that will let you play a ton. for something like skyrim you'd need about 480 steam processors for it to run smoothly, and the Intel HD2000 has about 200. Just for low profile games on Steam, it should manage, but i would consider upgrading to AT LEAST a a Radeon HD 5750.

why are the graphics cards on macs so weak?

Tim

For $1000 I can buy a Lenovo Ideapad with GT 750M cards in SLI, meanwhile a 15 inch macbook pro with only a single GT 650M costs almost 1k more. For that price the macbook pro should have a much more powerful GPU.

Answer
Items of a company are generally priced to maximize profit for the company. There is a marketing tool that pricing something high has people believing it is of better quality and performance because people think why would anyone be buying it at that price. However, just as very expensive designer goods are bought for the label. Apple has a cult following. The OSX system is easier to use but less versatile and far less freeware software and paid good software available. They throw in midgrade software for audio and video editing. It has a very good battery. The audio codec is a little better. The LCD is good quality. The CPU number is not shown by Apple. You find it here instead:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacBook_Pro
The actual quality and performance are pretty good, but they are terrible at the price point.
MacBooks being OSX have limited gaming titles anyway, so it takes a Windows dual boot or shell to do gaming. It is also shown that after the first couple of years, their failure rates are average to average plus in the industry.
http://www.rescuecom.com/news-press-releases/computer-reliability-report-2013-Q2.aspx
Keep in mind that most brands also sell low quality cheap laptops and they fail far more often. The better products are at least comparable to Apple over 3 to 5 years.
A squaretrade.com detailed study in 2009 shows Apple excels in reliability while they are under warranty then drops fast. The MacBooks are susceptible to liquid damage and handling damage specifically excluded from the warranty.
The Apple MacBooks take a great laptop skin using the glowing Apple.
Overall, MacBooks are for people that either care little about the price, or are absorbed into the cult, or are too simple minded to operate a Windows PC.
Each company chooses a target market. Lenovo chose North America for special pricing on the Y series gaming laptops for the sale price units. Samsung has excellent pricing in India across their products. HP prices well for a customized laptop where you only want one feature and leave the rest out; such as 1080p but skip backlit keyboard, bluetooth, and every other upgrade.
You will find in general that the Y series Ideapads are good in quality but not tops, because they are trying to keep the price as an affordable value. They are better than Inspirons, Satellites, Pavilions, Acer-Gateway anything, HP_Compaq. You may need a cooling pad. The Y510p can get a graphics card in the ultrabay replacing the DVDRW. That makes GT 750M SLI.
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Computer-Games-on-Laptop-Graphic-Cards.13849.0.html
very impressive for the price. They do not sell the module right away as a separate upgrade unless buying it installed. Along with the module they upgrade the AC-DC brick. And ALWAYS get 1080p if at all possible as affordable.

Best pc rig for old games?

Ex

Hi. I am big fan of old games that we can't play in windows 7. I know some ways to play in win 7 but thats not true for all of them, in fact most of them. I also know about virtual machines, dosbox and such. I don't want any of them because they use software video and graphics sucks. I guess you can say that I don't need good graphics because I play old games. But thats not true. Need For Speed 3 also NFS 4 and NFS 5 and many other games can be played in 1920x1440 resolution(yes, i played higher resolution than full HD of 2013 in 2002, but stupid of me, i sold my crt. god i miss it), There are games like worms, midtown madness and such.
Anyway, I will get a new rig and i want it to be compability with win 98. I ask here because some firms don't make drivers for 98. And hoping for which firms should I buy parts from. I am hoping to use catalyst of amd or equivient of nvidia to boost graphic quality. I do that in my current pc(win 7) with couple of old games that I was able to play in win 7. Since they are old, i easly open full Anti Aliasing and such. It looks good belive me.
And since most the old games only support 4:3 aspect ratio, getting a 1080p monitor is not a question. Higher res you can get is 1280x1024 and it streches up to 1080. So, i am getting a Asus PB278Q which has 2560x1440p. Not solely for old games, i will be using cad and solidworks. But its great or old games! Because i will be able to get 1920x1440 which has more than 2 times of 1024p pixels. And it doesn't strech.
So far plan is good in paper. But i am not sure about other hardware. Should i get intel 2nd gen like 2500k, or newer 3rd gen or even a 4th gen haswell. Newer is the better because i am not only using it for games. I just want it to be ALSO able to play old games. Or any AMD AM3+ like FX8350. And about graphics card, nvidia or amd? I prefer which has better driver support for win 98 and old games. Motherboard is an issue too. Gigabyte says in its am3+ motherboards clearly, that they won't support win 98.
Any kind of thoughts, suggestions and helps appreciated. Thanks...

Answer
Well, I don't think you could easily "build" a Windows 98 gaming computer from modern parts. You would have to try a local classifieds site such as Craigslist or Kijiji (that's what I did), or buy one off eBay. eBay vintage PCs are expensive, but you could always buy a Windows 2000 computer and install Windows 98 on it (again, that's what I did). You could also try Freegeek, although it seems like more of a local thing. Check out the link below, it sort of helped me. You can always build it from older parts, too.
I would recommend Windows 98 Second Edition, like in the article below.
