Building a Gaming PC. What do I need?

My Pet Dae

I'm looking forward to building my own gaming PC but im a complete and utter newbie when it comes to what type of computer components I'll need. Im starting from the ground up so I need to buy a case and everything. What are the components I need and what types of brands or specific types of graphics, motherboards, etc. would you recommend. Be as elaborate as you want: Put links or anything you recommend. What would make the ideal Gaming PC for 2013 around the price range of $1000.

Answer
MakeUseOf.com .... have an excellent guide - "How to Build a Gaming PC"

Downloading and reading this would be a good idea (in your case} me thinks.

As alreadfy posted. Newegg is one such site for parts,
as is Tiger Direct or CyberpowerPC.

Check pricesw at LEAST twice over a week or so, as they can quickly change I found.

Is this pc adequate for gaming?

Mitch

Hi, I was looking at building a new PC which I will use for medium games such as Counter Strike: GO, maybe BF4 and others. Mainly wanted to know if its a decent build and if the graphics card is al-right, thanks in advance.

Build:
Case: Thermaltake Commander MS-II Mid Tower Case
PSU: SilverStone Strider Essential Series ST50F-ES 500W Power Supply
CPU: Intel Core i5 4440 Quad Core LGA 1150 3.1GHz CPU Processor
RAM: Kingston ValueRam 8GB DDR3 1600MHz Memory KVR16N11/8
GPU: Gigabyte Radeon HD 7750 OC 2GB Video Card
HDD: Seagate 500GB Barracuda 3.5â 7200RPM SATA3 Hard Drive - ST500DM002
DISK: Samsung SH-224DB (BB) 24x Internal SATA DVD OEM Burner Drive
OS: Windows 7 Home Preium 64 Bit
My budget is around $600-$700 max

Answer
Missing a motherboard. Ratio of CPU cost to graphics cost is not optimized for gaming. Gaming performance is based on the graphics card unless bottlenecked by a weak CPU. HDD is small by today's standards. PCPARTPICKER.com helps with shopping and compatibility.
Your list is considered an entry level of gaming for 2013 with high upgradability because of the powerhouse CPU in comparison to a mid-level graphics card. That is even low among HD 7750's as it is a DDR3 RAM card. Low performance on the ram also. That is a 1x8GB, and ram runs better in pairs.
It is also a CAS 11, though supposed to be programmable.
Still meets BF4 medium settings

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/535

You can get a more balanced build of much higher performance at a lower price.
You choose between an i3 for later upgrade to i5, or an AMD FX-6300 for example and with a better CPU cooler can overclock to FX-6350. It is a bit top ended as a CPU but matches an i5 in non-gaming and is an adequate gaming CPU at a much lower price. The motherboard would be different.

It is good enough for Counterstrike GO
http://www.game-debate.com/games/index.php?g_id=2323&game=Counter-Strike%3A+Global+Offensive&p_make=Intel&p_deriv=Core+i5-4440+3.1GHz&gc_make=ATI&gc_deriv=Radeon+HD+7750+Gigabyte+OC+2GB+DDR3+Edition&ram=8&checkSubmit=#systemRequirements

Gaming performance of what you show is beat by a finished $580 system
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883258007
That graphics card you show only shows for sale at a big premium price of $94. Performance match at $70: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121633
It is beat by $80 cards.

Can't find that case in stock in major US sources. I am now guessing you are in Australia and not sure where you are getting your parts.

Answer
It's not bad, but it depends on what kind of games you are looking to play, some of the higher end 2013 games may be harder, but with a little better video card it could probably make the cut. The dual core processor is on the lower end, but not too bad. You may be running on lower graphics, but it will likely do what you want it to. Will it play Crysis? No, probably not efficiently, but with those specs it should easily be able to play most indie games and many AAA titles.

Intel Dual-Core i3-3220 processor. 3.30GHz, 3MB L3 Cache
-8GB DDR3 SDRAM system memory (expandable to 16GB).
-The iBUYPOWER Intel Dual CoreProcessor Desktop With i3-3220 Processor, WA928B gives you the power to handle most power-hungry applications and tons of multimedia work
-2TB SATA hard drive. Store 1,300,000 photos, 571,000 songs or 1,053 hours of HD video and more on the black iBUYPOWER Gamer Power Desktop WA928B with 8GB memory and 2TB hard drive.
24x Double Layer DVD±R/RW Drive. Watch movies, and read and write CDs and DVDs in multiple formats
-10/100 Fast Ethernet. Connect to a broadband modem or wired broadband router with wired Ethernet
NVIDIA GeForce GT630 Graphics. With 2GB dedicated graphics memory

The NVIDIA GeForce GT630 Graphics card should be able to play most high end graphics games without a problem at all, but you may not be playing on the highest graphics settings due to the lower end processor.

Looking for a gaming PC between 600-700 pounds.?

Will

I'm looking for a gaming PC between 600-700 pounds I won't be playing very demanding games, just games like skyrim, tf2 etc.
Yes I know building one will be much cheaper but I'll do that in the future, it's too much of a hassle to build one (Due to personal reasons) so please don't suggest I build one.

Answer
I recommend you build one.

Okay, okay, so that's not an option. How about one of these two, then?

CyberpowerPC Gamer Xtreme 1348

Operating System
Windows 8 64-Bit

Processor
Intel Core i7-3770K 3.5 Ghz

Memory
16GB DDR3 1333

Hard Drive
2TB SATAIII 7200RPM

Graphics
AMD Radeon HD 7750 2GB

While that's a beauty, Windows 8 can be a bit unfavorable, though.

ASUS CM6870-US-3AC
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883220160

Operating System
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit

Processor
Intel Core i7-3770 3.4GHz

Memory
8GB DDR3 1600

Hard Drive
2TB 3.5" 5400RPM

Graphics
Nvidia Geforce GT 545 3GB DDR3

Seriously, though. You can build a PC in a couple of hours with no prior experience, just watching a youtube video as a guide. You can easily find lists of which components to use online, and the end result is a cheaper, more powerful, better customized computer.

Alternatively, there's custom builders like iBUYPOWER that currently have some great deals.

Any all in one gaming pc's under 600 pounds? (read description)?

Must be able to run:-

Minecraft
Battlefield
Assasins creed
YouTube videos

Answer
try going to ibuypower.com or cyberpowerpc.com. you can custom build computers. most dont cost to much. its when you add the operating system or like microsoft word or something. also if you have a monitor then you save a lot from that as well.

or just get a ps3 or xbox 360. same thing though. those are not to bad for price but if you want a nice tv that is were you spend the money. a computer you can get cheap with specs to play anygame. its going above and beyond that cost the money. as well as monitor. you can go to amazon and look up some asus laptos even and get one like what i have for probably 600 or so dollars that will run all games. not on highest settings but still will play them.

i have a asus G50VT-X1 best buy model. has a 9800 geforce graphics card and is a centrino 2 dual core. and i can play battlefield 3, mw3 assasins creed revelation. black ops on it. black ops i get low fps like 15 or so for the first 10 to 20 seconds then it shoots up to about 45 to 60 depending on settings.

my other laptop which was only 1200 us dollars can play all the games on high to highest settings with no lag. and i ge 45+ fps on all games with high to highest settings. that is a asus as well i think best buy version and there g74 series laptop. has a 560 card and an i7.

Build a Budget Gaming PC?

Parker

I'm hoping to build a new Gaming Computer by the end of the 2013 year. Currently, I'm either playing the Xbox 360, or playing on a crappy Intel Celeron B820. Obviously, that laptop isn't meant for gaming. I want something that can handle games like The Elder Scrolls on medium-high settings with a solid framerate. (Definitely want to play the upcoming ESO on the top settings on the new rig)

I will be building my own PC to save the money (and put it towards better parts). So the first question is: is newegg.com really the place to go? It seems that in every forum I have gone to, newegg is mentioned at least 5 times.

The real question here is this: what parts are the best bang for the buck for a budget of around $800?
And if it's worth it to pay extra, be sure to put that in your answer. Just let me know how much of a difference an extra $50+ would make to the overall machine.

So if you could, go ahead and name all the parts (cpu, gpu, motherboard, case, an on for every single thing I will need) for that price range. Also, I would appreciate if you could say how much of an upgrade one thing is to another (4GB of RAM compared to 8GB, etc)

Lastly, I've heard people saying that dual-core processors wont be able to run games in the future...so how long will the parts I get last in your opinions.

And of course, the true PC test..."Will it run Crysis 3?"

Thanks so much everyone. Yahoo Answers is truly the best!

Answer
Ok, because of the variety of options I will just give a run down without going through and picking every part out for you to give you a understanding. Newegg is a good place to go along with Amazon. I have prime on Amazon, so I purchase almost everything on Amazon. If your mainly using the build for gaming look to spend more money on a graphics card. I have a 660 Ti and it runs Crysis 3 well along with Battlefield 3. I never played The Elder Scrolls, but you could look up benchmarks. I would stick with 8GB RAM, no more is really needed, you probably won't even use 8GB. For the CPU go with like a 3570K or something similar. With Haswell releasing, maybe come back to it since your not building until the end of the year. I'm not sure what your question is about "how much of an upgrade one thing is to another"... I mean, 4GB compared to 8GB, there is a upgrade, it's double the RAM. Hopefully this gave you an idea to think about, I'm sure new stuff (such as haswell) will release around June, but email me with any questions!

Answer
I've had a budget PC for about 3 years now and before I had a TERRIBLE laptop with MANY MANY broken parts such inside. Although, I do know some games that I enjoy that I can still play
without having to buy an Alienware or something. You can try:
-Minecraft (3D Blocky Survival)About 27 Bucks
-The Powder Toy (Pixel-based simulator with tons of elements that you can mess around with) -FREE-
-Terraria (Adventurous 2D Survival)-10 Bucks
-Dead Pixels(2D Zombie survival)3 Bucks
-GAMES MADE BY VALVE (Counter strike, Portal, Half-life)(For the most part, you with lowest settings you can play)-Max 15 bucks for each, I think.
-Garry's Mod(Awesome sandbox with unlimited possibilities, user made gamemodes over the roof, you can even code in your own weapons/props/anything if you know LUA (: )-10 Bucks
-Blockland(Blocky 3D Game with tons of mods)-15 bucks?
-Spelunky(2D Cave-exploring game that's pretty difficult)-FREE-
-Stealth Bastard(2D Slick looking stealth game) -FREE- (The deluxe version is 10 bucks, but the original has a level editor and tons of levels are uploaded a day)
-Super Crate Box(Small fun game but hard, no end point)-FREE-
-Cave Story+(2D Shooter)10 bucks
-Artic Combat(Free FPS that has a taste of generic FPS's like killstreaks and ADS)-Free-(obviously)
-Lugaru(3D Fighter) You can be a kung fu bunny! It's actually really satisfying to kill other bunnies, and there are some mods that can liven up your experience. -FREE-
-PlanetSide(3D Big world sci-fi shooter)-Free *The game is EXPECTED to be free soon, but as of now it costs about 20-30 bucks. (The sequel is too graphically intensive, but it's free to play)
-Killing Floor (Zombie/Specimen survival) Only a couple mods but it is a fun game. -20 Bucks
-Team Fortress/ Team fortress 2(Class-based FPS) -FREE- (The second is kind of pay to win in some cases, but you can craft your own items with older items and earn/find all the weapons yourself.
-Ace of Spades Classic/Commercial(Class Based FPS)The classic version is free, and only has 3 classes. But the second costs 10 bucks and has more gamemodes and such.
-Faster Than Light(2D Space Captain Simulation-thing)You make the choices to the rise(or death!) of your ship and crewmates!-10 Bucks
-Binding of Isaac(2D Shooter)- As disturbing this game may be, there are a TON of items that define what your playthrough will be like, it'll be a different game each time!-5 bucks
-Castle Crashers(2D Co-op hit-em-up!)A couple different knights that brawl out through various levels with special abilities!-15 bucks
I can't think of any more games at the moment, but there you go. I'd like to inform you most of the games are on Steam, which is a program that you can digitally buy games and be able to install them . Keep in mind Steam has a bunch of sales, so sometimes you can actually buy some of these games for as much as 75-80% off! So if you'd like, you can just wait until the nearest holiday. They also have "daily deals" and "midweek madness" and weekend specials, so everyday you'll see good deals on games. (:
If you'd like to add me on steam, my user is: hawkthehawkess
Lol, excuse my awful creativity. HAPPY GAMING!

Answer
Ron Sicat here

Nice! Gaming PC's are awesome.

I'm an I.T. Specialist/Gamer just to let you know ahead of time.

First things first. How much are you willing to spend? You always wanna keep that in mind because when shopping for parts, specially for a gaming rig, you don't want second tier gear if you're a hardcore gamer.

But your configuration isn't bad.

The Intel E7400 series is arguably one of the easiest processor to work with when overclocking is in mind. But heat is it's downfall when the speed is being cranked up. Don't get me wrong, some people have cranked this thing to 4GHz stable "holy shizznits". If you are planning to overclock this bad boy, buy an excellent cooling system to back it up. But as a general rule of thumb, overclocking shortens the life of your hardware and can lead to it's death if you are not prepared or have no real experience doing it.

As far your motherboard goes, I'm gonna assume that it's the Intel P45 chipset. This motherboard is not bad at all. MSI is pretty good on providing overclockers enthusiast with tools such as a built in easy to use interfaces in the bios or software wise in Windows. Though majority of mobos manufacturer are now doing this. The Intel P45 chipset is where this board stands out. It supports up to a whopping 16GB of memory and can support multiple LGA-775 CPU's all the way to the Core 2 Quads and Extremes meaning this board will last you because it's upgradeable. There's really no cons about this board. It just depends on your budget.

As far as memory goes, it doesn't matter nowadays what memory company to go with. What matters is the speed of the memory both clock and latency, and the amount you need to get. I say for a gamer, 2GB is the bare minimum nowadays to keep up with future games. One of my gaming rigs has this setup:

CPU: Intel Pentium D 2.8GHz
CPU Cooling: Cooler Master Copper Core Silent
Motherboard: Asus P5LD2 Intel A-Life Chipset
RAM: 2GB Dual Channel DDR2 533Mhz
GPU: Nvidia XFX Geforce 9600GT 512MB
Sound: Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS
Optical: NEC DVD-RW Drive
PSU: Thermal Take 430w Silent Series
Monitor: Dell 20" SP2008WFP LCD
Case: Aspire Black w/ 2 80mm Fans 1 Front and 1 Back

One might look at my setup to be a mere performer, but don't underestimate it, it's a beast inside. In real time benchmarking and performance, this computer is really the minimum of where someone needs to be if you are a hardcore gamer on a budget. This setup alone with no overclocking can play any games I throw at including the infamous Crysis. I don't just run any games either, I run Call of Duty 4, Call of Duty World at War, Fallout 3, Grid and FIFA09 and I play them on a whopping resolution 1680x1050 with all settings turned all the way up. Except Crysis, but I can run it on High Settings with an average frame rate of 34fps and up.

All in all, you seem to be good to go. But please, don't get Vista. It is not worth to go Direct X 10 and loose a pretty good amount of frame rates. Windows 7 is coming but not too soon although with my testing and experimentation of the RC1 release, it handles games a whole lot better than Vista. Almost like Windows XP but with the Vista look and feel.

As far as your videocards goes, unless you are a die hard ATI supporter, the best bang for your buck is the Nvidia Geforce 9600GT in any configuration. This card is comparable to an 8800GS and out performance anything in its class. You can get one at newegg.com for $89 bucks, although sad to say I got mine for $169 when it first came out. This card is so amazing of a performer for the money. But I'm only recommending it if you are on a budget and you want a kick ass GPU that wont hold back on settings.

If you need more info or got questions, I got tons of suggestions and answers.

If you got a myspace, hit me up at myspace.com/ronsicat

Or email me at segaron@aol.com or datxflipxboixron@yahoo.com

Hope I helped you out. Down bellow are some legit sites I personally go to for tech info's.

i just copied and pasted this from the hp website after i customized it
i was just wondering if this would be a suitable gaming pc
i just changed the graphics card based on your guys feedback. This is the new one

2GB DDR3 ATI Radeon HD 5570 [DVI, HDMI, DP, VGA adapter]

Answer
for a gaming pc your main focus should be the gpu and it seems you picked the cheapest dedicated one. try for something like a 6870. you can downgrade to an i5-2500 and 4GB of ram without any noticable performance loss and put that money into a better gpu. in fact, 4GB @ 1600 would be better than 8GB @ 1333 especially if they have the same timings

Gaming PC under $500?

Mason

I have wanted a gaming PC for a while now, but being 13 i cant get a job. I managed to save up $500 and want a good Gaming PC. I prefer Intel i3 and up( my dad doesnt like AMD i dont know the difference) Thanks
It doesnt have to built when i buy it i will put it together if not done already

Answer
You need to raise your budget.

You can get the hardware alone for $500, but a copy of Windows costs $100 by itself. So your total cost would be closer to $600.

Here's a list of builds, each color is a different performance level. Green ($527) is the one you want. I suggest going with a cheaper case (NZXT Gamma) which saves you enough money to upgrade to the Core i3 2120.

http://www.hardware-revolution.com/best-budget-gaming-pc-february-2012/

A Dual-Core Sandy Bridge Pentium G860 beats a cheap AMD processor for gaming, although I recommend getting an i3 if possible.

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/amd-fx-8120-6100-4100_6.html#sect0

Your other option in this price range is buying a used gaming computer- if someone is selling a rig that cost them $650-$800 a couple years ago, you might find a deal for around $500.

**** Update ****
The built-in APU in AMD's A6/A8 processors does have much better gaming performance than Intel's integrated graphics, but it's still inferior to even a $60 graphics card.

Computer keeps freezing when playing a game?

Rico

For some reason, whenever I play a PC game (More specifically Farming Simulator 2013) my computer just randomly freezes and I cannot do anything at all until I force restart my computer. Everything seems like it works completely fine but suddenly the audio starts repeating along with graphical errors and not being able to do anything happens simultaneously. I am nearly sure that my graphics card has something do with this because sometimes while watching YouTube videos the video will glitch and turn into a full green screen along with an error message that says my graphics card has successfully recovered.

My Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS. I have just recently installed this card into my computer.

Not sure if this matters as well but I also have 4 gigs of RAM

Answer
Update your graphics card drivers.

If you have the latest drivers, remove them and reinstall them.

Only do this from the NVIDIA website.

I had this problem when my brother put a new card in my computer and that's how he fixed it. Mine did exactly the same thing.

:)

Why are games stuttering?

MultiGamer

Most of the games get stuck multiple times/stutter on my PC. This happens for Call of Duty: Ghosts, Battlefield 4 and a little bit for Prototype 2 on 1920x1080 resolution. Do I need to upgrade my RAM to 16 GB. My friend had 4 GB RAM and GTA IV was stuttering badly. He upgraded to 8GB and all stuttering disappeared. I haven't seen it yet but he said so.

NOTE: This only happens while turning the camera with the mouse. I can run freely without moving the camera.

My PC specs:
HP Envy h8 1400x
Intel Core i7 3770k 3.4 GHz
Corsair Vengeance DDR3 8 GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GT 630 graphics card with 2048MB VRAM and 192 CUDA Cores
1 TB HDD with 500+ GB free.
Windows 8

Answer
Hi,

The GT630 is likely to be the cause of the issue. It's simply holding the rest of your PC back. It isn't fast enough to run games at 1920x1080; especially without turning some graphics settings down. I suggest you swap that card out for something like a GTX 760.

This is a good website where you can see how well graphics cards perform:
http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/graphics/2013/11/27/battlefield-4-performance-analysis/3

It doesn't have the GT 630 on the list but it's worse than the HD 7770 (which is the worst performing card on that test).

Make sure your power supply is good enough first before changing graphics cards; I'd advise a 500w power supply; with at least 30A on the 12v rail(s). You can check for this by opening up the side of the case and reading the sticker on the power supply box.

What is the best Gaming PC under 1000?

Jared

I'm trying to get the best pc i can to run garrys mod and skyrim with as little lag as possible with the most FPS

Answer
If you mean $1000 then don't worry you'll be able to run Gmod and skyrim easily.

Search on ebay for 'custom gaming pc' and you'll get loads of very good ones.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Custom-Gaming-PC-Computer-Cyber-Monday-Deal-AMD-FX-4100-3-6GHZ-759390-/160708595377?pt=Desktop_PCs&hash=item256afa8eb1

This one for example, it looks gorgeous, quadcore 3.6ghz processor, 8GB ram, SLI GTX 450 but you could ask them to change the two 450s to a single 560 and its evenbetter for less.

This is just an example but this is an excellent machine that will surely get you running gmod and skyrim easily, skyrim with a few tweaks may get up to ultra high

Any tips for a Prebuilt gaming pc for under 800 dollars?

Zack YOU

I am currently looking at the Dell XPS 8300

With an i5 core,
6 gigs of ram
and a AMD Radeon⢠HD 6770

Thanks!
Intel® Core⢠i5-2400 processor(6MB Cache, 3.1GHz)

Its actually around 900 dollars, and I'm looking for something cheaper
When I go customize it at the dell center I can choose how many gigs of Ran I want. The default is 4 I chose 6.

Answer
Which model i5?

Sounds decent for $800 though all around, but I don't know why they'd put 6 GB in when the i5 lines use dual channel RAM, not tri

EDIT: This is pretty much the same thing for $800
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883227321

You don't want 6 GB for a Sandy Bridge i5 since it uses dual channel. 4-8 GB only. 4 is plenty for games

Brand buying advice

You get what you pay for. Systems with high end parts with low prices are to be viewed with suspicion. They have to cut corners somewhere to get the price down. What cost you less today is going to cost you more tomorrow.

Apple makes a good quality laptop. The problem comes when it requires service or minor upgrades. It is near impossible to do anything with them. They even glue the battery and hard drive down so you can not change it. They solder the ram to the logic board so you can not increase it. They lock up most of the software so your stuck with what they approve.

Lenovo has serious stand behind their product problems. They bought IBM PC division and proceeded to drive the quality of the system into the ground. Their customer service is well below par. They even makes Dell customer service look good. The last and final thing to remember about them is they are a Chinese Government own company. It is up to you if you want to trust them.

Toshiba, Panasonic, Sony should be avoided because of their heavy modification of Windows and the drivers. If you remove some of the bloat they install, you can cripple the system.

Acer, Gateway, and eMachines should be avoided period. Low end system that are driving the race to the bottom.

Dell once made a good system and fell from grace. They are now struggling to regain their place in the market. Customer service is one of many problems with this company.

Alienware are glorified Dells and are more name then product. Priced extremely high for what you get. They do perform but you can get the same for less by looking around, just not packaged to be eye candy to the gamers.

Samsung has a history of using cheap parts in critical areas. Capacitors has been one area Samsung has a known history of going cheap, causing units to fail early. For that reason I would avoid them.

ASUS and HP do not modify Windows as bad as the other manufacturers. They have excellent build quality. They might add a lot of bloat but they also makes it easy to get rid of it.

Ultrabooks are the higher end of Wintel laptops but they have some of the same concerns as Apple. They make it next to impossible to change any hardware in them. Service of them will have to be done by the manufacturers. With most of them, you can not change your own battery or hard drive. They are designed to catch your eye but they are not any more special then other laptops except for the fact that they are slim or thin. Your paying for it being thin and slim. For the money your going to spend on it you can buy a much better laptop with more power.

Hybrids are the worse of the worse. The flip or detachable touch screens are just a disaster waiting to happen.

Never buy an All In One. They are far worst then laptops of any kind to service and they have a higher failure rate.

Choose wisely.

I wanna know if anybody can put together a part list for a gaming PC. This is going to be my first gaming PC. I need at least 8 gigs of ram and a dedicated Graphics Card. The CPU also has to have an Am3+ socket. This must include a operating system and a monitor. And if possible can you please get the prices off of Amazon or Newegg? Thank you! cx

P.S: Can you make sure this can run games made from 2010 to 2013 on low to medium settings?

What Power Supply should i get for my gaming PC?

Trafalgar

What power supply do you recommend? and what wattage? i checked on the newegg calculator and it said 457w but i dont feel like its reliable for some reason. i think 700w should do but im really not sure.
here's my build:

Case: Rosewill Thor V2 (4 fans)
Motherboard: Asus Z87 Gryphon Micro ATX
CPU: Intel Core i5 4670k 3.4GHz & a Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO for it
Video Card: nVidia GeForce GTX660 Ti
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2x 4GB) DDR3 1600
Storage: Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5 7200 RPM
Optical Drive: just a random $20 DVD drive

which power supply do you recommend that is modular, affordable and with enough power for this build?

Answer
Cool, I got the exact same THOR V2 case for my next build, just came in the mail Friday.
Excellent case.

For a GTX660 Ti, nVidia recommends a minimum of 450W with two 6pin PCI-e card power connectors.
http://www.geforce.com/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gtx-660ti/specifications
As it is never a good thing to stretch a power supply to its maximum output, I suggest getting a 600W.
I always get a PSU at least 100W over my actual power requirement, for lower temperatures and less fan noise. This also leaves some room for future upgrades (SLI, etc). Last but not least, due to capacitor aging, the actual power output will decrease over time.

Cheap, no name, generic power supplies tend to grossly overstate their power output and they can spike or crap out and fry your key components.

Only buy a reliable brand name like Corsair, Thermaltake, Cooler Master, Enermax, Antec, XFX, Seasonic, OCZ, or Silverstone.
Make sure it's an 80 plus certified power supply (80 plus means guaranteed over 80% of rated power in actual output)
It is also preferable to get a modular power supply, to eliminate cable clutter and allow for better air flow in your box.
NEVER CHEAP OUT ON YOUR POWER SUPPLY, it's the engine that drives your entire computer.

Also, may I suggest for such beautiful build to upgrade to the new GTX770 card??
So much better...
If you decide to get GTX770, upgrade power supply to a 700W or 750W, as nVidia recommends a minimum of 600W for GTX770.

For power supplies, I'm a big Thermaltake fan, IMHO much more reliable than Corsair.
I just got the fully modular 850W Thermaltake SMART M Series SP-850M for my future build (still in the mail), $140 on Amazon, $150 on Newegg:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153158
I also have a 750W modular in my 2012 build, that has worked excellent so far. Very quiet and stay cool enough. For that one I paid $60 after $20 rebate:

3 Question on my Gaming PC build ( graphic card, power supply and ram )?

HardcoreGa

So this is my first build, I want to build a low budget gaming PC that can run games like BF3 on medium or high settings on 50 FPS average, I have a couple of question ( remember I'm a beginner in this building stuff )
1_ graphic card : GTX 560, GTX 560 ti or GTX 570 which one should I choose, I learned that there is no big difference between the 560 ti and the 560, I need a graphic card that can run BF3 on medium or high settings on 50 average FPS, so what should I choose (remember the low budget :P)
2_ Power supply : I learned that GTX 560 needs at least 650 W and the GTX 570 needs at least 750 W can someone link me to a good quality/low budget power supply ?
3_ I nearly now nothing about choosing the ram, I think I will be fine with 4GB but there are many kinds, can someone link me to a great quality 4 GB ram, or should I just go with the 8 GB ?
thanks in advance
So PTRP first of all thx alot for answering my questions, so u say that the GTX 560 non ti version would play all games on max settings including BF3 but on what frame rate ( The GTX 560 I want to buy : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127593 ) ?

Answer
Okay Jack, here are my suggestions:

I also have a GTX 560, this card can play ALL GAMES on max settings PROVIDED that you settle with a monitor with 1600x900 resolution (like my 20" samsung syncmaster), believe me if I say that you wouldn't notice the difference between 1080p and 900p. 1600x900 (900p) is actually an excellent resolution also.

As for the PSU, the power requirement of the GTX 560 is actually 450w minimum, thus a 600W Branded PSU would be IDEAL and is ample enough for future upgrades as well.

As to the RAM, 4 gb is indeed good enough for all games but since they are cheap, 8 gb is actually the sweetspot (future proof). A good brand is the g.skills ripjaws. Now the speed would depend on your motherboard. If your mobo supports 1600mhz then that's good but if it only supports up to 1333mhz that would be fine also.

Just go to newegg.com and type it on the searchbox to see the hardware you're looking for.

EDIT: Hi again Jack,

Okay, here are the specs of my build:

Core2Quad 8400 OC to 3.0 ghz
8 GB RAM DDR3 1333mhz
GTX 560 non-ti
20" LED Samsung syncmaster (1600x900 resolution)

now, even though my cpu is just a Core2Quad (of which even the I3-2100 is much better for gaming), with the GTX 560 non-ti, I could practically play ALL GAMES on MAX settings on 1600x900 resolution.

FPS:

1. BF3 - 40 FPS AVE, Dips down to 35 but seldom
2. SKYRIM - Outside towns and inside dungeons 50-62 FPS, inside towns 40-50 FPS sometimes dips to 35 FPS also
3. MW3 - same as BF3
4. Crysis - 50-60 FPS most of the time, lowest FPS is at 45
5. Mass Effect 3 - around 40-50 FPS (I just started playing it so I am not sure of the exact numbers but it is very smooth)
6. Metro2033 - Same as BF3
7. Dead island - not a problem
8. Deus EX human revolution - very smooth

I am actually a gamer and was able to finish all games that I have mentioned except mass effect 3 of which I am currently playing.

Just get a 20 inch monitor with 1600x900 resolution and a decent processor that is better than my core2quad like the phenom II x 970 (if you want AMD) or if you have the extra budget, the I5-2400 is very ideal. But the I3-2120 will be also good for gaming.

Now since you're just aiming on mid-high settings then 50+ FPS on ALL GAMES will not be a problem with the GTX560 used on a 1600x900 monitor. When I was actually playing BF3, I just put it on high settings (the difference was not noticable actually) and my frames was 50+ FPS.

Just don't forget to download and install the latest driver at the NVIDIA WEBSITE and never use BETA DRIVERS because they tend to have bugs and is not perfect yet.

Gaming headset for PS3?

I'm considering buying a gaming headset for my PS3 and I am torn between the Turtle Beach PX21 and the Tritton AX180. I want a headset with stereo sound that has a microphone, but I want to keep the price tag below $100 if possible and I want something that will last more than 6 months. I mainly play COD MW2 online right now and usually play about 5 hours a week. Anyone have either of these headsets, and if so, would you recommend them. Or does anyone else have a different headset they recommend? Thanks.

Whats a good gaming PC that could at least play call of duty 4?under 1000$$USD?

Alex G

That could play and not be choppy.

Answer
Um, you'll be able to make an AMAZING PC for $1000. Here's what you should buy (it's what I'm running and can run COD4 or any other game at full settings except maybe Crysis or other inefficient engines):

~4 units of 1gb DDR2 RAM. Brand does not matter, buy what's cheap if you don't care otherwise!

~Socket 775 Intel processor. I'm running a 3ghz Pentium D, dual-core processor that I got OEM for $50. You won't find it that cheap, but still, shouldn't cost you too much -- no need to spend over $200 on the processor unit.

~Video card. Here's the thing that's gonna determine how well your games run. No ifs ands or buts, go with the ATI HD3850 or newer. A lot of people will tell you NVidia is better than ATI, but don't listen -- most of them are just fooled by superficial benchmarks on the internet and the performance is not really any better. ATI has better support and is easier to maintain and use, and look a whole lot cooler too. "ATI HD3850 video card" is what you'll have to ask for/search for at the store.

~EVGA board. They're cheap and have fine basic features. Alternatively, buy a cheap equivalent ASUS (better brand, tends to be more expensive, you decide which you want). Choosing a motherboard is easy, just look at all the boards the store has and make sure it is compatible with all the other stuff. That's really all there is to worry about! But it's also the most important thing.

~And finally, power supply. Just ask for a power supply that's 450 watts or more, simple as that.

So just write down this stuff and then go to your store, or an online store like http://www.tigerdirect.ca, and ask or search for each individual item and put it together yourself (very easy to do). It will not cost you over $1000 and you'll be able to run any game. This build of PC is over twice as powerful as, say, the 360 -- more, in some aspects (the 360 only has 512mb of RAM, this PC has 8gb; 16 times as much!!)

Good gaming pc for about $1000?

Greg

just wondering of any good gaming pc models under $1000 (please not dell or apple) for playing MMORPGs (mainly world of warcraft) thx.
