I have a Nancy Drew game I want to play, but it's old. It's from 2000. I set the set-up under Windows 2000 and tried to install it, but it won't. Also, the disk of the game only shows set up icons and the information of the game, it doesn't show up as the game. What can I do to play the game? Thanks!

Building your own would be far better than Digital Storm or any other prebuilt PC

You can build a high end PC for under $1200

Core i5 2500K processor
8 GB DDR3 RAM
P67 mobo
1 TB 7200 rpm drive
1 (or 2) AMD 6950 Radeon video card(s)
Corsair or Antec PSU

What wattage should I be looking for in a power supply for my PC build?

best quiet gaming pc image

Ryan

I'm currently ready to purchase parts to build a new gaming PC and sadly, in the past, I've always had to ask for assistance with choosing a PSU/Power Supply. I want to go with Corsair for the brand as I hear really good things about them. I just cannot, for the life of me, figure out what wattage I need!

Also, I do not plan on overclocking at all and if there are tips, formulas or references that may help me with this issue in the future they would be greatly appreciated. My current combine carts from Newegg/Tigerdirect are as listed below.

Thank you in advance for your time and consideration!

CPU - Intel i5 3570k
MoBo - Asus P8Z77-V LX
GPU - EVGA GTX 680 4 Gigabyte - Non OC'd
RAM - 4 x 4 Gigabyte (16gb) 1600 mhz
SSD - 60gb Intel SSD
HDD - 2tb Seagate SSD
Cooling - Corsair H70 (Is actually on sale for less than the H60)

Answer
Your system is going to require about 600W of power. IF you plan to expand such as adding an additional GFX card you should account for an additional 150 - 200 watts. I would recommend around 850W to account for potential upgrades.

Things to consider are 800 - 900 watts of power. Number of SATA connectors and PCIe connectors. Modular PSU are better for cable management but not necessary. Efficiency is also important.

A test in 2005 revealed computer power supplies are generally about 70â80% efficient. For a 75% efficient power supply to produce 75 W of DC output it would require 100 W of AC input and dissipate the remaining 25 W in heat. Higher-quality power supplies can be over 80% efficient; energy efficient PSU's waste less energy in heat, and requires less airflow to cool, and as a result will be quieter.

Various initiatives are underway to improve the efficiency of computer power supplies. Climate savers computing initiative promotes energy saving and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by encouraging development and use of more efficient power supplies. 80 PLUS certifies power supplies that meet certain efficiency criteria, and encourages their use via financial incentives. Efficient power supplies also save money by wasting less power; as a result they use less electricity to power the same computer, and they emit less waste heat which results significant energy savings on central air conditioning in the summer. The gains of using an efficient power supply are more substantial in computers that use a lot of power.

Look for PSU with an efficiency rating of 80 PLUS GOLD or 80 PLUS PLATINUM. 80 PLUS SILVER is just as good but GOLD and PLATINUM is better. 850W would be your best bet, but if you do not plan to upgrade for a few years a 650W PSU will be fine for your build.

Hope this helps and GL.

I am thinking of buying an iPad but a couple of questions?

best gaming pc december 2011 on Radeon HD 6750 PC Low Profile 1GB Edition PC Gaming Graphics Card ...
best gaming pc december 2011 image
Q. What are the restrictions of accessing content could the iPad cause compared to just using my PC?

Is the iPad no worse or better than other tablet PC brands?

I would rather not have the uugggggh Apple! moan but rather a clear answer.

Answer
I've had my iPad 2 since December of 2011. I absolutely ADORE it. It's seriously like having a lightweight thin laptop without the mouse and keyboard. In fact, I'm answering this question using my iPad right now!

The other answerer is right, you DO have to do everything through Apple, BUT, however, if there's a screw up, they're always there to help and almost always compensate you for any problems you run into.

Since I've had my iPad, I haven't had a single problem. Not with the device, and not with Apple.

Pros:
Everything. (I'm a 21 year old female, I don't ask for much.) It's lightweight, portable, (I have it in my purse with me wherever I go). There are extremely useful apps in there. Also there is iBooks. You can go to JW.org and when you save their PDF Watchtower and Awake! magazines, it'll download directly to your iBooks app. (which is free by the way). Almost every single app I have was free. And there are a ton of useful apps too, not just games. The only apps I paid for (most of which where .99 - 1.99 tops) are homeopathy friendly apps that I use for work or answering questions. Medical stuff basically.

The apps I have are twitter, NWT bible, a whole BUNCH of recipe books, there is even a ''My Time'' app that helps keep track of your pioneering! How cool is that?! I also have yelp, pinterest, Youtube, skype, instagram, amazon shopping, the weather channel, a whole bunch of nutrition and fitness apps, (I'm a buff gym junkie. or trying to be haha). I love everything about this!

Typing and navigating is also extremely easy. I have friends who have blackberry playbooks, and some android run tablets and nooks, etc, and I just find the iPad a lot easier to navigate and use. But that's just me.

Cons:
The battery life is pretty good, but it could be better. It could also be because I have my iPad on the highest setting too, and the fact that I always use it. So, don't take my word for it!

The size. It's pretty big, which isn't a bad thing at all actually. But some people would be more comfortable with the iPad mini, which is exactly the same, but just a tad smaller. (And the screen and retina is actually sharper and brighter on the mini than it is on the iPad 2).

If you have any more questions, general or specific, please ask!

I'm an Apple iFreak.

How do I install a new graphics card onto a desktop?

best gaming pc retailer uk on ...

Hello, I am going to be buying a new desktop and it doesnt have the correct graphics card I need so I am getting an Nvidia graphics card. I don't really know much on how to install it but could you tell me how I do it? Is there a disc that lets you install it or something?

Answer
hi there
installing a graphic card isnt as difficult as you think.... however theres some basic procedures to follow and there shouldnt be any problems
1) before buying a new graphic card check your new computers motherboard and see what graphics bus(slot) it has...however most pc,s made within the last 2 years use the newer pci-express x16 bus ...allthough some may still have the older agp x8 slot....so make sure you check this.....download and run the program "gpu-z"( http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/ ) ...this will evaluate your pc and inform you on which type of graphic bus your motherboard supports...look under "bus interface "
2) before installing any graphic card make sure you remove the drivers for your onboard video....this will be located in "programs and features" and click uninstall at the top to remove these..
3) so you have your new card and you have made sure your power supply can handle it ( note : some powerful graphic cards may need more power than your new system has...so for example a nvidia gts250 needs a 500watt psu with 24A or more on the +12v rail ....check the cards packaging for the power supply requirements,or check the website....or contact the retailer on their support number ) then once you have made sure of the power you can then earth yourself by touching a radiator.....then open the side of your case
4) take your new graphic card and insert it into the appropriate slot and make sure it pushed completely home...then if any clips need to be locked into place do this...then screw in the backplate to the case to fully secure the card.....then if the card needs additional power plug in the appropriate power connector...however most cards come with adapters ...so you can convert a standard 4pin molex into a 6pin pci-express connector
5) after making sure everything is ok you can close your case and then power up your system....older pc,s needed you to enter the system bios and change some settings so the bios would recognize your new card however newer systems are more "user freindly" and will recognize the new card and apply the correct settings
6) once your pc is turned on and windows starts up you may notice your icons and desktop are larger than normal...this is because there are no drivers installed yet...and allthough you can use the driver disk that came with your new card its better to download the latest drivers from the manufactuers website,,,here are the links to the 2 main graphic card brands
NVIDIA : http://www.nvidia.co.uk/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-uk
A.T.I : http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx
7) download the driver for your card and once downloaded install it making sure you follow the prompts..then when prompted restart your pc
8) once windows loads again your desktop should be looking normal...the drivers will set your desktop to its "native" resolution so for example if you have a 19" widescreen monitor then this would be 1440x900....and thats nearlly it
9) all thats needed now is to download the latest direct x api from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=2DA43D38-DB71-4C1B-BC6A-9B6652CD92A3&displaylang=en ...direct x is required to run the latest games however most games you buy will have the direct x needed for the game included on the disk...
and thats it....one tip though...dont panic...take your time...its not that hard...however if you get stuck or require any advice let me know
good luck mate !

Can someone suggest me a good pre-built gaming pc or a place i can order one?

Jossh

I want a i7 Processor
8GB+ RAM
1TB+ hdd
I don't know anything about graphics cards or things like that, i am willing to spend up to £1,250
I live in the UK so if it has cheap UK shipping or is based here then that would be better.

Answer
Newegg.com has a number of pre-built gaming PC's that you can browse through. Never buy directly from a specialty store like Alienware. You'll spend entirely too much money for mediocre performance. You can buy two good rigs with the budget you have. Be careful not to ask anyone what you can get for that amount of cash or lead anyone to believe you don't know about graphics cards. And don't buy in a retail store! I've rarely seen a product on the shelves of a Best Buy or similar retailer whose machines are worth the price they're selling for.

Your budget for a good gaming PC should be around £600 ($900 American) or less. Here are a couple that I would recommend. Newegg ships to America and Canada only, but you can look at these specs are compare them to PC's offered in the UK. The prices are bound to be similar.

iBUYPOWER Gamer Extreme NE731i

CyberpowerPC Gamer Xtreme 1376
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883229385

Look for something with an i5 cpu rather than an i7 - either an i5 2500K or an i5 3570K. Both give you the best bang for you buck when it comes to gaming. For a graphics card, I would recommend a GeForce GTX 660ti. If you unfamiliar with the graphics card market, there's no reason to go for any model higher than that. Also, stick with 8GB of RAM. There's no reason for any gamer to go with 16GB. The rest of the components in a pre-built rig will support these three, so you won't have to go digging for more info aside from maybe the size of the hard drive you want. Hope this helps!

best gaming pc 2013 under 500 image

Ahmed

Hello !!

I would like to know what is the best laptop under 1000$

I need a laptop mostly for College using like gaming , browsing and using Photoshop cs6 .
I need it to run BF , crysis , GTA IV .... ETC

about the specs

HDD: not less than 640~750 GB
RAM : not less than 6GB
Screen : not less than 15.6
Have a backlit keyboard
Display : Anything that works great will be fine :) i don't care if it's 1080p or 720p

Stuffs that is really important for me :
High build
Good battery life : i really don't want it to be like 1~2h , like min 3~4h is great :D

I don't really mind running some games in mid or even low , well if it runs great without lag , then that's all i need , beside most of the games still looks good even in low .

What i do really care is it to have low issues , high performance and to last long .

Thank you .

Answer
I would go with ASUS or HP. ASUS has the best warranty when it comes to laptops. Some of their models come with a two year warranty with a one year accidental warranty. HP can give you a reliable best bang for the buck laptops or they can give you give you a superior system if you step up in their high end systems. One of the ASUS is above your price point but it can play all the games you want.

ASUS laptop.

Brand buying advise

You get what you pay for. Systems with high end parts with low prices are to be viewed with suspicion. They have to cut corners somewhere to get the price down. What cost you less today is going to cost you more tomorrow.

Apple makes a good quality laptop. The problem comes when it requires service or minor upgrades. It is near impossible to do anything with them. They even glue the battery and hard drive down so you can not change it. They solder the ram to the logic board so you can not increase it. They lock up most of the software so your stuck with what they approve.

Lenovo has serious stand behind their product problems. They bought IBM PC division and proceeded to drive the quality of the system into the ground. Their customer service is well below par. They even makes Dell customer service look good. The last and final thing to remember about them is they are a Chinese Government own company. It is up to you if you want to trust them.

Toshiba, Panasonic, Sony should be avoided because of their heavy modification of Windows and the drivers. If you remove some of the bloat they install, you can cripple the system.

Acer, Gateway, and eMachines should be avoided period. Low end system that are driving the race to the bottom.

Dell once made a good system and fell from grace. They are now struggling to regain their place in the market. Customer service is one of many problems with this company.

Alienware are glorified Dells and are more name then product. Priced extremely high for what you get. They do perform but you can get the same for less by looking around, just not packaged to be eye candy to the gamers.

Samsung has a history of using cheap parts in critical areas. Capacitors has been one area Samsung has a known history of going cheap, causing units to fail early. For that reason I would avoid them.

ASUS and HP do not modify Windows as bad as the other manufacturers. They have excellent build quality. They might add a lot of bloat but they also makes it easy to get rid of it.

Ultrabooks are the higher end of Wintel laptops but they have some of the same concerns as Apple. They make it next to impossible to change any hardware in them. Service of them will have to be done by the manufacturers. With most of them, you can not change your own battery or hard drive. They are designed to catch your eye but they are not any more special then other laptops except for the fact that they are slim or thin. Your paying for it being thin and slim. For the money your going to spend on it you can buy a much better laptop with more power.

Hybrids are the worse of the worse. The flip or detachable touch screens are just a disaster waiting to happen.

Never buy an All In One. They are far worst then laptops of any kind to service and they have a higher failure rate.

Choose wisely.

Looking at laptops for work & play?

OutOfLuck

I've got an older model (gateway, intel centrino, windows 7...can't really remember all the stats but it's around 3-4years old). It's good enough for anything work related/going online, But I'm thinking of getting a new one for under 500$.

Found a deal where the following was at or below my range:

- Toshiba Satellite C55-A5332

I'm looking for something with some decent software/programs already installed for reports/essays/presentations, etc. but also for gaming (nothing insane like alienware, but enough to skate buy with current PC games).

If the one above is good enough, or you have some suggestions in my price range, let me know.

Answer
For preinstalled software for Office applications, most new laptops come with Microsoft Office Trial preinstalled. This will work for 30 or 60 days, but then you have to purchase. Instead, consider LibreOffice, a full featured Office suite which will do almost everything Microsoft Office does and just as well, but is completely Free! It is fully compatible with Microsoft file formats so you don't have to worry about being able to view/modify/create Office documents. And did I say it was FREE!?

Take a look at these rankings:
http://blog.laptopmag.com/best-worst-notebook-brands-2013/3

For something to do gaming, you will need to raise your price point a bit. Gaming machines start at around $750. You can save a bit off that if you get a factory refurb or perhaps a model from last year or such. This should give you some ideas for gaming laptops:
http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/landing_pages/ideapad/gaming-pcs
http://www.asus.com/us/Notebooks_Ultrabooks/Gaming_Products/

Lenovo, Asus, HP, and Samsung are the top 4 laptop brands. I wouldn't consider any other brands.

Dell makes Alienware and they are not worth the money charged.
Acer makes Gateway. You'd have to pay me to use one of their machines.
Sony hardware has generally been good, but they are notorious for putting huge amounts of crapware/bloatware on machines and gathering information on their consumers without their knowledge or permission.
Toshiba has bottomed the rankings. Personally, I have used them and never had a problem, but that does not appear to be the case any more.

What do you think of my Gaming PC build?

Isaac

What do you think of my strictly gaming pc build? Here are the specs.

HAF 912
ECS H61H2-M2
i3-2120
Seasonic S12II 620 620w
EVGA GTX 570
G.Skill 8gb 1333 Value Series
CD/DVD Burner
Windows 7

How well will it perform? Will it max out modern games? Keep in mind this system is strictly for gaming. Thanks!

Answer
You're in good shape, but for running games on max detail I'd recommend upgrading to a Core i5 2400 or 2500. There's almost no difference between the Core i5 2500 and Core i7 2600 in games, so paying more for the i7 isn't worth it for gaming. And for playing on HIGH settings, the Core i3 2120 is fine. But when you push to ultra settings in really intense titles, the CPU starts to play a bigger role. Basically in the scenarios where you'd take full advantage of a GTX 570, you'll want a bit more CPU horsepower behind it.

If your budget is tight, go with 4gb of RAM and a Core i5 2300 or 2320. At ultra settings it would pay off. Maybe consider the 448 core GTX 560 Ti classified edition instead of the GTX 570. That would save enough to upgrade your CPU. The 448 core model is really a lower-end GTX 570, based upon the same GPU.

And all the builds I like that i've made come to 1,000 or more with the monitor and OS (windows 7) so I need a build that will come to 800-900 total with the monitor and windows 7 included. Games i'll be playing... Diablo 3, Guild Wars 2, and Elder scrolls online whenever it comes out and maybe Skyrim and the Total War games.

you could chop off 50$ if you choose an AMD 7770 GHz edition instead of 7850. Newegg will have cheaper prices as well so that could save you another 50 atleast.

How to tell parents I want to buy something?

Ricky

I want to build a gaming PC for about 900$ and I want to pay for it by myself. I want to tell my parents i want to build one but i dont know how to go about doing it. I dont really want to just say "can i buy a new computer" or anything.

Answer
How about saying that you have been thinking about a project that combines electronics, computing and gaming and that you have been looking into it and are planning to build a pc yourself, as it may be something you want to do as a career.

Looking for advice on building my first gaming PC?

best gaming pc build under 600 on Best Under $600 Gaming PC Desktop Computer Build 2013
best gaming pc build under 600 image

Brandon

Not to say I haven't had a PC before. But this would be my first time building one. I want this to be a gaming PC, but slightly different than most. I'm really only interested in playing indie games. I don't need something that will run Crysis 3, Battlefield 4, or Skyrim. Just the smaller indie games. Minecraft, Kerbal Space Program, and stuff like that.

I've never built a PC before and I don't really know parts that well, but I'm fairly tech savvy. Any insight, tips, or straight up builds would be super appreciated. Also, I'm on a fairly tight budget and want to spend $500 bucks or less. Though the possibility of upgrading in the future would be possible.

Answer
Taken from Amazon:

Motherboard - MSI LGA 1155 - $48
CPU - "Intel Core i5-3570k - $219
CPU Cooler - Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO - $37
RAM - Cosair Vengeance 8GB - $66
Graphics Card - EVGA GeForce GTX 650 - $110
Sound Card - Creative Sound Blaster Audigy SE Card - $25 (Optiona)
Hard Drive - WD Blue 500GB Hard Drive - $45
BluRay Burner - ASUS Internal Burner Drive - $75 (Optional)
Case - Cooler Master Elite 430 - $43
Power Supply - Cooler Master Elite 460w power supply - $38

All together you are looking at about 700 bucks
Some parts you can find cheaper - Im sure you can find a 40 dollar motherboard for example.

Taking away optional parts (Burner and sound card), you'll be at 600, give or take.
The two most critical parts are the CPU and graphics card, but with the games you listed you can probably go cheaper on the both and be under your 500 dollar limit. With the build above, you'll be able to play pretty much any game on the market today.

Playing those games (Skyrim, Crysis etc) on Max or Ultra settings...thats a different conversation.

If you want, you can go even cheaper on other parts and use the savings to get an even better graphics card, like a GTX 660ti or something.

Hope this helps.

What kind of computer should i get for gaming?

Tom Harper

Hey i was wondering what would be the best option for playing computer games like Arma 2/dayz, minecraft, league of legends, other steam games, etc. Im kinda new to pc gaming. My budget is somewhere around $1000. Would it be smarter/cheaper to build my own computer and install only the things i want (ive never built a computer before though) or would it be best to just get an pre-built regular one. My friends tell me if you can build your own it's cheaper. I dont plan on overclocking it or playing it for more than 4 hrs in a sitting. This build is what im currently looking at:

Thanks

Answer
Build or Buy or have custom made is a common question. To not overly repeat, try to make sense of this Q+A:
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AhTl4dVlzsAQN4HilGHXYwzty6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20130902153829AAqfdXZ
and, it includes a link about graphics cards.

The referenced build you show is respectable.
Z77 Pro3 as a motherboard has SATA III 6Gb/s transfer rate from the HDD, USB 3.0 front header, and is full ATX and Realtek ALC892 audio from a reliable top 4 supplier (Gigabyte, Asus, MSI, Asrock). The missing feature is SLI Compatibility for an additional NVidia card. It is crossfire compatible for AMD graphics with a 10% performance reduction. Takes a $30 or so upgrade into the SLI compatible. The power supply Thermaltake SP-750M looks OK, but not sure why so much power when the graphics is limited with the motherboard. There are better for the price.
This shows the Thermaltake:
http://www.realhardtechx.com/index_archivos/Page680.htm
The build shows $952.45:
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1AsOv
Some items taxed and extra shipping not shown.
It isn't bad.
In my reference I show the Vanquish from Digital Storm at $1059, all built.
Good computer case, quality builder, Haswell i5 not set up for overclocking, good 600 watt supply which is all it needs, and the stronger GTX 760 over the GTX 660 ti
http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/860?vs=854
It is about a 6% upgrade.
And, you can go to Newegg.com, and get similar or better performance, trading off some quality characteristics and specific game performance, like Far Cry 3 that needs a great CPU.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=Property&Subcategory=10&Description=&Type=&N=100019096&IsNodeId=1&IsPowerSearch=1&srchInDesc=&MinPrice=&MaxPrice=1000&Manufactory=81232&Manufactory=11210&Manufactory=12046&PropertyCodeValue=1436%3A302714&PropertyCodeValue=1436%3A312190&PropertyCodeValue=1436%3A277234&PropertyCodeValue=1436%3A340851&PropertyCodeValue=1436%3A312577&PropertyCodeValue=1436%3A426479
Or, swizzle the build a bit:
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1Atfy
Now fully ready to pop in a second GTX 660 ti, and a weird case with carry handles that should be easy to work with, and an awarded power supply, with an extra GB of graphics ram so ready for SLI, and not overclocking the CPU, so $950.31

Just wondering because i know a lot of GBA pokemon games are fake but i dont know about these ones. is this an offical copy of Pokemon Yellow?

Answer
I'm not able to look at the link right now because I'm on my phone. But look at the picture on the game and determine whether or not it is the same as the legitimate games. If the picture is overly shiny or the colors are too dull/faded, beware. Make sure the item is not located in Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, or Singapore because it is very likely to be a bootleg. Anything from the U.S. is usually safe. Make sure that the seller has a feedback rating over 99.7%. Look at the negative and neutral feedback the seller has received and check to see if there are any complaints regarding the authenticity of the items that have been purchased from the seller.

EDIT: I looked at the game and it looks legitimate to me. I own a Pokémon Yellow game that looks exactly like that.

Can you upgrade ATI Radeon™ HD 3200 graphics card in a HP Pavilion a6750f Desktop PC?

best gaming pc possible on Best Gaming Mouse Collection
best gaming pc possible image
Q. I want to make my HP Pavilion a6750f Desktop PC more of a gaming pc if possible. If i can upgrade the graphics card what would be compatible and best choice? Also any other compatible upgrades would be great.

Answer
Graphics card:
Your board is equipped with a PCI-E socket allowing for any modern graphics card to be installed. your only limitation is the power supply in the unit which sadly is only 300 watts.

Although that should be more than enough to run a mid range card such as ATI 4670 /57XX. Personally I recommend ATi as at present the 4XXX range can be found for peanuts and are incredibly powerful cards for the price. The 5XXX range of ATi cards are expensive and do not offer a huge performance boost over previous generation 4X but they do come with DX11 support as opposed to DX10.1, Although this is neither hear nor there given a large portion of new releases are still using DX9 and DX10.0 graphical architectures.

If you do want to go high end with a 4870 (a fantastic card) or have money to burn on a 5870, you will require a newer power supply unit. 500 Watts will be sufficient, but be warned, with power supply's, you get what you pay for, I recommend brands such as Antec, Akasa, OCZ, Enermax.

Other upgrades:
Your board is an AM2+ board and thus should be compatible with the majority of new AM3 processors, although you may need to update your bios to achieve full compatibility with the AM3 range. This can be done from dells driver support section. However according to dell your system is already fitted with a quad core AMD which is more than enough for the most demanding tasks.

Memory:
According to dell your system comes with 8gig of DDR 2. in this day and age, 2gig is fine, 4 is ample, 8 is more than enough!!

Rule:
After 16 years of building, fixing, repairing, and selling systems and networks, the golden rule of a performance PC is this...

"Your PC is only as fast as its slowest component"

Which in your case is the graphics card.

Good luck and happy gaming.

p.s. don't forget to turn up your graphics settings and resolutions on your games when you get a new card, you would be amazed at the amount of people who buy power gaming systems and play games on default settings!! A complete waste of power and money.

P.P.S

Is it possible to build a gaming pc for under a grand?

Rachel

Is it possible to build a gaming pc for under a grand? This computer will be used from graphic design/multimedia (flash video creation, photoshop, etc.) It will also be playing games such as WoW, Portal 2, and maybe even Crysis 2. Any recommendation on how this could be done would be greatly appreciated. If you believe the system I'm looking for will cost over 1,000 please explain why. And thank you!

Answer
Yes, It is, IF you choose the right spec and build it your self. And If by "under a grand" you mean under 1000 $, here's my recommendation :

AMD Phenom II X4 955 3,2 ghz
MoBo Biostar TA890GXB
HDD 1TB WD
RAM DDR3 2x2 GB
XFX HD6850 GPU
PSU CORSAIR pure 600W

In total, it's about 8.2 million rupiahs....roughly US$950, includes the chassis, DVD Drive, logitech Mouse+Keyboard & logitech Speaker. US$1070 with windows 7 home premium. (Excluding the Monitor)

Yeah maybe that price is a bit...high, but you'll be able to play heavy games like crysis 2 on full HD and high settings without lags or something like that.

Also, these I got these price from a local store here in Indonesia. You might be able to find cheaper ones online, or where you live.

what are the most important things for a gaming PC?

best gaming pc manufacturer on Computer Manufacturer Top And Best Computer Makers From China
best gaming pc manufacturer image

Alfonzo Al

I'm ordering a gaming PC in individual parts, and i would like to know what parts should i pay MORE for to get my computer to run smoothly, play in HD, all that good stuff, ect.

Answer
The Processor/CPU

The CPU is the most visible component in the eyes of most buyers. Most gaming computers are labeled â often multiple times â with the brand of processor inside them. This would lead you to believe that the processor is the most important component in a gaming computer. It isnât â that title goes to the video card â but it does come in second.

The Video Card

Choosing a great video card for your gaming computer is very important. Video cards are the only component in a computer that is specifically designed to display high-resolution, high-detailed graphics. Even the most powerful computer will be a terrible gaming computer if it does not have a good video card.

RAM

Many gaming computer manufacturers will offer âhigh performanceâ memory as an option. Donât fall for this. Memory speed has nothing to do with gaming performance.

Hard Drive

As with memory, the hard drive you choose wonât have much impact on gaming performance. It certainly wonât increase your framerates in games. Instead, the only difference youâll see will be in loading times.

How can I learn to build a gaming rig?

John says

I always hear and read about how it's better (and cheaper) to build your own gaming pc instead of buying a custom one from a manufacturer like Alienware. But since I know very little about building PC's, I wonder if there's a way to learn without having to pay for a class. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Answer
building your own rig is actually really easy. i learned simply by looking around newegg and reading forums, and i think most people learn that way. computer building is so easy now a monkey could do it. people just get scared because they have bad experiences with computers. check out this guide to get you started.

never hesitate to ask on boards and forums. people are really friendly and more than happy to help.

It's up to the individual games as to whether or not they support a gamepad.

Other games can usually use third-party software like Xpadder to translate from gamepad to keybaord commands.

Should I buy a gaming pc in parts or all at once?

Jose

I'm trying to build a gaming PC that's around $1400.00. I'm on a tight budget so i was thinking i could buy it in parts. This would allow me to splurge a little on better parts. Problem is the return policy is only good for 30 days so if something's broken, I've just got a bunch of expensive paper weights lying around. This is my first time doing this and I'm curious as to how it's normally done. Any suggestions?

Answer
$1400 isn't a "tight" budget for a gaming PC. In fact, I would consider a budget over $1k quite roomy. A common midrange build goes for around $750. The tightest budget gaming build I ever worked on was ~$500.

So with $1400, buy it all at once. There is absolutely no reason to do otherwise.

Here's a ~$1200 build:
http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=17385591

Note that there's enough extra budget space to a combo of any of the following:
>SSD, Bigger case, higher end motherboard, water cooling, more RAM, bigger HDD, or better GPU (though the GTX 670 is already the second fastest single-GPU card on the market).

I have a first gen i7 gaming pc I made a few months ago . I need to move and sell this pc, which cost me over 1400 to build without the OS. Nobody replies to reply on my craigslist add, and I've been posting for two weeks. I'm trying to sell for 950 with w7 ultimate. Are there any better sites?

Answer
Look up pcs with similar specs to yours on Ebay, then simply make the price lower than those pcs. It'll sell very quickly. Or start a bid on at $500. It's a bit risky, but there's a good chance that there are a couple of idiots who'll bump up the price. You may even get more money than what you want.

How long does Newegg usually take to ship their products?

Iron Ice

I ordered a bunch of parts for a carefully thought out gaming pc build from the site on Sunday and am wondering how long it generally takes to ship things. Most of the stuff was shipped from Memphis and one thing from Newark, plus another from City of Industry. I live in Atlanta. Any personal experiences?

Answer
The standard for newegg is "3 days ground" unless you ordered some thing different. If you ordered Sunday it will leave the loading doc Monday at 9 AM you should see it tomorrow. I use Newegg all the time and there east coast warehouse is 55 miles away from me. I ordered a part last sunday night and it arrived today at 1:45 PM I know my UPS driver and his route so I when things are comming. When you get your on line conformation you will also get a "tracking key" notice with bold blue numbers on it, click on it, and it will take you to the sign off of just were your package is at the moment! When I get to the shop in the morning I look at the tracking key If it says "out for delivery" it will be at my place at about 1:30-1:45PM I can have any jobs set up that need the new parts as they come in.

What is the most upgradeable motherboard currently on the market?

Ryan Ong

I am scratch building a gaming PC. I have a total budget of around $1k, and I expect to keep the same motherboard for 4-5 years. I am looking for one that is easily upgradeable, and has a decent price. Thanks folks!

Answer
>All motherboards are updatable, more or less, for about 6 months to 1 year from the date they are introduced onto the market. After this, motherboard manufacturers stop introducing updates. I don't think there is any one motherboard or manufacturer that provides more service than any other. It has to do with the fact that a mobo manufacturer is always introducing newer boards and they don't have the time or money to continue supporting older boards that have proved to be STABLE. Asus, Gigabyte and MSI all provide about the same level of update support - which as I say is about six months to one year from date of introduction.

How many watts should my power supply be?

Felix

I'm going to build a gaming pc and this is what I'm getting:
AMD Phenom II X4 965 AM3 3.4Ghz 512KB 45NM 125W 4000MHZ

Samsung 24x SATA DVD¡ARW Internal Drive without Software, Black SH-224BB/BEBE

Western Digital Caviar Blue 500 GB SATA III 7200 RPM 16 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Desktop Hard Drive - WD5000AAKX

Gigabyte GeForce GT 630 2GB DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 DVI-I/D-SUB/HDMI Graphics Card GV-N630-2GI

Corsair 8GB (1x8GB) DDR3 1333 MHz (PC3 10666) Desktop Memory (CMV8GX3M1A1333C9)

I'm planning on getting a 460w PSU but I don't know much about PC's because this is going to be my first build.
Also tell me if I am forgetting anything.

Answer
There are a couple areas of this build that need to be to addressed

1. The GT 630 isn't enough video card. You're going to want a GTX 650 ti Boost or a Radeon 7850 to handle more demanding modern games

2. Thte Phenom II X4 is pretty outdated, for about the same money you can get a faster FX 4300 or FX6300. Just make sure you get an AM3+ mobo

3. It would be more beneficial to go with 2x4GB of RAM in order to utilize dual channel.

For the PSU a 500 watt Corsair, Enermax, Silverstone, Antec, XFX, or PC Power & Cooling PSU would be fine. When it comes to PSU's you get what you pay for.

Ignore Frostfire's chart that she seems to incessantly post whenever PSU question crops up. I'll explain; The rated wattage for any give PSU is rated in DC, *after* the conversion from the AC power that comes out of your wall socket.

So for example if you have a PSU that's rated for 1000 watts with an 80% efficiency rating. That means that it'll pull 1200 watts of AC power from the wall, 200 of those watts will be lost (in the form of heat) in the AC to DC conversion process, leaving you with 1000 watts for the computer to use.

Frostfire's chart incorrectly assumes that the manufacturer doesn't take the conversion from AC to DC into account when giving their wattage ratings (they do).
