if you are referring to pc gaming computer and home desktop the difference is the gaming one has a better prosseser, better ram, better hard drive, better everything especially the video card. so if you want to spend about 500 more dollars you can get a great pc. a gaming one. but if you're tight on $ get a desktop. unless you're going to do sophisticated things like gaming, and programing but for Microsoft office and basic computing get a desktop.

i want to buy a gaming desktop for under 800$. building one is not an option. if you can give me names of pcs that are great for gaming.

ibuypower makes some decent affordable gaming pcs.

any of the ibuypowers with a quad-core cpu and graphics card and 4 or more gigs of ram will probably be fine for you.

the basics are quad-core cpu is helps, 1gig graphics card is good, 4 to 8 gigs of ram all together works well. as for specifics Intel's core 2 series of dual and quad cores are great and their icore 5 or higher are great, amd phenom tri core and quad core are fine and as for specific graphics cards theres just too many to say but having a graphics card with 1gb of dedicated is more then enough for most games.
To be honest for gaming the most important is a decent graphics card and 4 or more gigs of ram, even a decent dual core cpu would be fine in most cases.
