I was going to buy a gaming PC, but i was told it was cheaper to buy the parts and put it together myself. I'm not a pro but i have somewhat experience with computers. I just need to know what exactly i need to buy and where i can get them for cheap. My budget is around $500. Thanks for the help.

Answer
You should have specified if we should a PC case in that price or not.
Since I tried to configure the best PC you could buy with MORE / less 500$ I didn't include a case:
Intel platform:
Power Supply &Hard Disk Drive(the 7200.12 series from Seagate is the one that includes one of the fastest performing HDDs(I personally own a 500GB 7200.12 and is very fast)):
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.524434
90$
Motherboard(96$)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131634R
You get:DDR3 1600 without overclock,SATA 6Gbps,USB 3.0.
Processor(209$):
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115067
You get: quad-core,2.8GHz,8MB L2 cache,heatsink&fan
Memory(74$):
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820134812
2 of these and you get: 4GB of RAM,DDR3 1333MHz
Graphics card(75$ / 110$):
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814141118
You get:1GB of DDR3 VRAM, DirectX 11,HDMI out
or this one(paste in the newegg search box and hit enter): N82E16814127483
Total:544$
It's 44$ over the limit you specified but you can buy just 2GB of RAM and the total would be:506$
I made sure everything is compatible so you don't have to worry about that.
AMD Configuration:
N82E16813131651
You get:SATA 6Gbps,USB 3.0,DDR3 1600MHz without overclock,
Processor:
N82E16819103851
You get: 6 cores,2.8GHz,6MB L3,3MB L2
The rest of the configuration is the same since the hardware I chose for the Intel one should work with the AMD configuration without a problem.
The price with the AMD configuration would be:
539$
The final price doesn't include an optical drive!
This LG drive comes equipped with Lightscribe and 24x writing speed: N82E16827136147
Total price(including optical drive: 564$(Intel) / 559$(AMD)
I would go with AMD if I were you because of the 6 core processor. You would be better prepared for the future than with a quad core processor.
If you feel you don't need a hexa-core processor, here's an alternative:
N82E16819103871
It's a 3.0GHz quad-core CPU. 100$
Like this you save 100$ and still have a powerful computer.
Alternative(save 60$):N82E16819103808
It's a 3.2GHz quad-core CPU(Phenom II).140$
Total with Phenom II: 559$ - 59$ = 500$
The motherboard I chose supports the Phenom II processor(s) I paired it with.

What is an affordable gaming pc I could buy?

Hey, I have been messing around with crossover games and such for my mac, and have been receiving horrible fps. I need to invest in a cheap gaming pc (around 500-600 bucks) that can handle games like tf2, or even more demanding games without too much stutter. Could you link or refer me to a pc that could handle my gaming needs? thanks.

Answer
There are too many variables involved to link 1 system. Where do you live? what games will you be playing? If you could send me a message I could help you more and work with you on what would cater to your needs.
