Good for first gaming pc build?

I posted my original gaming build last night, but after getting some good input this is the new list I've come up with. Just wanted to know if it was a good set up for a first time pc builder and good for running a game like Star Wars: The Old Republic and web surfing. In the future I might be doing video editing, but nothing extremely advanced. All help is wonderful!

This is my budget: $500 I would love to put more towards a pc but I really can't so if you know of parts that are equal value but better I would love to know of them. Or if I needed to put more money towards a specific part while sacraficing for another that would be fine.

I play games like Crysis 2, Battlefield, Call of Duty, Mass Effect 3, Assassins Creed and Hitman Absolution. I already have a Westinghouse L1951NW 19" 1400x900 LCD Monitor and a Windows 7 Ultimate disc. Is my build good? I am a little bit worried about my graphics card being able to run Battlefield 3, and/or not even being necessary for my Monitor. I would also like to stay under $700 if possible. Thanks.

The Z68 motherboards cant overclock the ivy bridge cpus. Also with that board you cant make full use out of the pci-e 3.0 bandwidth. (tho a 7850 would probably not see much if any performance loss in 2.0, but higher end cards will or if you try to crossfire 7850s you will notice a huge bottleneck)

So really id suggest you drop your cpu to a non K model like the 3450/3470 or something.
Then id suggest you get an H77 or B75/Z75 or Z77 motherboard, so you can make full use of ivy bridge features.

Now for your ram, since you have an ivy bridge you REALLY should be ddr3-1600 memory. Also its ALOT better to get 2 4GB sticks, that way you will be running in dual channel, thus doubling memory bandwidth. There is really no need for more then 8GB, as even while hardcore gaming and multitasking at the same time, ive never broke the 4GB barrier lol.

id get a little better psu like the corsair 500W, or the antec new eco 520W.

everything else is good though.


EDIT: jim is retarded... and i7 will make ZERO literally ZERO difference in gaming over the i5. (you may see 1-2 fps MAX difference, and that is only because of the larger cache). If you are going to spend $100 more, you are better off spending it on the graphics card which will add like 100 fps more >.>


And if you have a retail copy of windows (not oem) you CAN reuse it on another computer. as the retail copy can be installed infinite times on any computer you want.
OEM are locked to the motherboard (tho ive heard people just call microsoft and say their motherboard died and they got a new one, and they can reuse oem codes, but i can NOT confirm that)


EDIT2: why would that be a problem? XD
all motherboards have like 2 usb 2.0 headers, the usb 3.0 header is completely different. You jsut need that IF your case has usb 3.0 ports on the front. So having that on your motherboard is very good in the event you upgrade to a 3.0 case. Also since the zalman z9 plus has usb 3.0 ports, you can probably buy a usb 3.0 port for the front of your case from like the zalman website or something.
Ive know a few other cases that allow you to swap out a cases 2.0 for 3.0 ports.

Either Go with a Tier 7 Mainstream build:

You've got plenty of leeway to tinker. For example the GTX 680 really isn't worth the minimal boost over the GTX 670. Why buy a $250 motherboard when a $150 model works just as well? There's no reason to exceed 8GB of RAM for a gaming rig. And you can easily save money by choosing a smaller SSD or less fancy case. Personally I'd just go with a Cooler Master HAF 912 or Corsair 300R and put more money into the GPU solution.

A lot of people may suggest higher bang/buck configurations... anyway, if you're not too familiar with hardware just target one of the higher-end mainstream builds and upgrade a few things.

Lately I have been thinking about building a computer rig. I decided to use a forum post to do so.


1. What is the purpose of the computer? (Note: If you are planning to say multimedia, you will have to be more specific as all types of systems are capable of doing that)
Programming. - Visual Studio 2012, Microsoft Office 2012, Compiling, Graphics, Adobe Master's Collection ( Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, Fireworks ). Very very little gaming will be done. This rig is not intended to be a gaming rig.

2. Are you open to alternate ideas/products giving similar better performance but offering more VFM / sellers? If not- why?

$3000 is beyond overkill for such a machine. However, it sounds like this is a business machine and therefore I suggest you buy a business class workstation from a Tier 1 manufacturer because you don't want to be troubleshooting stuff by yourself while your money-making computer is down. you want to call someone and have them send the replacement part overnight.

but replace the i3 with an i7-3770 (not the K version since you won't be overclocking) and upgrade the 64GB SSD to the 256GB Samsung 840 in the other build. You'll still be well below $1000 so invest in a nice monitor, maybe one of the 27" 1440p models since I know developers like their real estate space. The onboard GPU in the i7 is more than enough to power that resolution for software development and the occasional flash based game.

I'm getting a new computer, but I still don't know which one to buy. I know gaming computers cost a lot, but if you could give me suggestions on how to make it a bit cheaper, that'd be great. So basically, I'm asking what I should look at for a fast gaming computer at an affordable price. Links would be great.

With $2000 you have MORE than enough.

Either Go with a Tier 7 Mainstream build:

You've got plenty of leeway to tinker. For example the GTX 680 really isn't worth the minimal boost over the GTX 670. Why buy a $250 motherboard when a $150 model works just as well? There's no reason to exceed 8GB of RAM for a gaming rig. And you can easily save money by choosing a smaller SSD or less fancy case. Personally I'd just go with a Cooler Master HAF 912 or Corsair 300R and put more money into the GPU solution.

A lot of people may suggest higher bang/buck configurations... anyway, if you're not too familiar with hardware just target one of the higher-end mainstream builds and upgrade a few things.
