what is the best pc game ever?

George W

I've been playing PC games since the early 90's. Colonization, Civilization Call 2Power, Warcraft 2, Unreal 1, BALDUR'S GATE, final fantasy 7, Battlefield 2, CoD, Elderscrolls, Mafia. Just a few of my favorite PC games that I've burned countless hours playing, but I think CIV5 with the new Brave New World may be the greatest PC game of all time. So what was the best game ever made?

Answer
Cool. I've been playing games since Doom 1 and DN3D ( I'm 23 now). Depends what you mean by that question. Hard to say what's best since there's a lot of subjectivity involved in gaming (almost like asking what's the best movie). If we're talking technical achievements, then there's no ultimate game since something better is always around the corner. If it's sheer legacy and impact on the gaming industry, I would say maybe Half-Life, Doom, Thief, Starcraft, Elder Scrolls, Diablo 2, Battlefield 1942, GTA 3, HL2 and many more I can't remember. All of these games have had some impact on their genres and the way modern games are played today. for one thing, COD's cinematic single player can be traced back to Half-life's original approach to making FPS gaming more story-oriented and cinematic, which wasn't the case before. UT99, BF1942, HL-CS and COD4 pretty much all changed the way MP games are played. Unreal 1 can be credited for bringing FPS gaming in large open, ended environments where before they were confined to closed spaces (eg: the ones in quake 2). Diablo 2 got everything so right that it spawned some 500 clones and so on

there are some old games that I've never played as a kid but enjoyed even today. You should try: Sacrifice (frustrating but very original), Silent Hill 2, Heroes of Might and Magic 3 (also an excelent game), Stronghold 1, Freespace 1/2, Nexus the Jupiter Incident

Also, this out of print gaming magazine has lots of info from every gaming age http://www.cgwmuseum.org/galleries/index.php?year=1997&pub=2&id=157

Put together something on newegg real quick, it's upgradeable and packs a lot of oomph for right now, total cost is $768.92 plus shipping. You will need to add a couple SATA cables and fans.

Specs:
LITE-ON CD/DVD Burner - Bulk Black SATA Model iHAS124-04 - $18.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827106289
It's a DVD burner. Gotta have one. Don't bother breaking the bank with it. For a future upgrade, might want to purchase a Blu-Ray drive.

COOLER MASTER RC-690-KKN1-GP Black SECC/ ABS ATX Mid Tower Computer Case $59.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119137
It's big, it's roomy, it looks nice. It has two fans with it already, and spots for two more. And it's cheap. What else can I say?

Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 ST31000528AS 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive $59.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148433
1TB of space. Plenty of space to store your games and movies.

MSI 870A-G54 AM3 AMD 870 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard $89.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130275
Supports crossfire, has two PCI-E 2.0 slots, and a spare PCI-E slot for a TV tuner card or whatever you want. Has USB 3.0. And has 6 SATA ports. So even if you manage to fill up one hard drive, you can always plug in more.

SAPPHIRE 100283-3L Radeon HD 5770 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card $149.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102873
This bad boy is meant for playing games at 1080P resolution, and should handle pretty much every game made at maxed out resolutions. But what about future games? Crossfire it with another 5770 later on, and you'll get an instant 2x boost in frames per second and will be good for years to come, and it won't break the bank upgrading.

CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX 650W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Compatible with Core i7 $89.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139005
You want something reliable to keep your system powered. This is crossfire certified. So you know it can handle the load of twin graphics cards if you ever need to.

A-DATA 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model AD3U1333B2G9-DRH $89.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820211364
4GB is more than enough for any game right now. Once there is a need for more ram, the motherboard has two spare DDR3 slots so upgrading is easy.

AMD Phenom II X6 1055T Thuban 2.8GHz Socket AM3 125W Six-Core Desktop Processor HDT55TFBGRBOX $199.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103851
This puppy dynamically overclocks itself to 3.2ghz depending on what you need, however other people have overclocked this to 4Ghz. While the i5/i7 series might outdo the Phenom series on a clock per clock basis, the difference is minute. 6 cores means you shred through music and movie encoding and your computer can handle far more than you would.
