2012 Gaming/ 3d Modeling/ Video editing PC Build.?

Guys im from India. Im going to buy a Desktop PC with custom parts. Here's my current Configuration. Please tell me if the current build is ok enough to play Battlefield 3, Battlefield Bad Company 2, Skyrim, and most of the new games like Battlefield 3. Here the list :-

Intel Core i5-2500K Quad-Core Processor.
AMD Radeon HD 6850 or Nvidia Gtx 550 ti ( cant choose between these 2).
NZXT M59 Gaming Cabinet or Cooler Master Elite 431.
LG 22inch LED Monitor.
Cooler Master 550w extreme Power PSU.
Asus P8H67-M-LX 16GB DDR Intel Motherboard.
Ram will be 4GB DDR3 Memory of 1333 MHz.
500 GB Seagate HDD.

Please Note That :- i'll also be using software like Maya 2011/2012, Combustion, most of the adobe softwares like Premiere CS5, After Effects CS5. then HD Video Editing.etc. Also please tell me that if choosing Nvidia, is it eVGA gtx 550ti or ASUS gtx 550ti. OR if choosing Radeon, is it ASUS HD 6850 or XFX HD 6850. Please answer fast. Thanks.

Either for gaming or the programs you want to use, you're not going to make it with either of those cards because they are too weak.

You should be looking at an ATI 6970 or NVidia GTX560ti core 448, at least.

In fact, for the use of your editing stuff, you'd be better off with a Quadro card, but they're bloody expensive ($2000 to $7000) and not fit for gaming...

The rest of your system is okay, except you'd want to go for at least 8GB of RAM for the rendering/editing stuff...

Animated (3d) PC Chess Game?

I used to have a Chess game for my pc where the pieces were people, and when you moved a piece they would "walk" to their destination and fight each other.

I'm looking for something like this online and I can't find anything like it. I don't remember the name of the game or its manufacturer.

Any clues as to what it was or something similar to it? It was not an internet game, it was a Player Vs. Computer only.

It was called Battlechess! I loved it. I don't know about any online chess games like it.

However, Chessmaster 10th Edition ($20 at Best Buy) has a couple of animated sets which are much better than the old Battlechess program! They are selectable, so you're not stuck with them if you don't like them. Not only are they animated like the one you mentioned, but there's a 3D mode where you can actually put on a pair of those Red/Blue 3D glasses and play in a true 3D environment. I thought it would be kinda stupid but I actually was impressed! (The weird thing is that the game doesn't come with the glasses. I just read that the game had the 3D feature and I used a pair of glasses I had lying around from a 3D Shrek video I had. If you don't have the glasses you can Google search them online and purchase a pair.)

There is one other like Battlechess. It just came out for the Sony PSP. It's called Online Chess Kingdoms. It is very nice with the moving characters and has a really nice viewing function where you can swing the board around to see it from all angles with the joystick. (Very fluid.) Don't be misled by the word "Online" in the title - you can play the computer offline as well. It plays a pretty good game.

I recommend both programs equally.

If you have an old Nintendo 64, they made a Battlechess-like game for that called "Virtual Chess" with the moving characters you like. (They are more goofy and cartoony though.) It also has a very impressive tutorial for beginners as well as experienced players.

Gaming PCs are far more useful.
3D TVs are gimmicky and quite pointless.
If you like gaming, computers, doing work, go for the PC.
If you like movies and headaches, go with the 3D TV
If you enjoy gaming avoid the 3D TVs. It wont make you any better, it makes it harder

(PS, watching movies with friends? As long as you has as many friends as glasses you're ok. That is as long as neither you or your friend wears glasses already)

How can I play standard PC games in 3D?

I have a 3D monitor and I want to be able to play standard games e.g. left 4 dead 2 and COD Modern Warfare 2 in 3D. I have all the equipment provided with the monitor e.g. drivers, polarized glasses etc.

Help me build a PC for 3D rendering and for gaming.?

I've never built a computer before, so I need some help. Bare with me because my knowledge of computer hardware is poor, pretend you are talking to a 5 year old.

This machine is for both work and pleasure. I want to build a computer that has amazing performance for 3D rendering (I'm a 3D artist but know little about hardware), can multitask well with without much slowdown from running multiple instances of Photoshop and MAX and even working while rendering (if that's possible) and also an excellent gaming machine. Lots of USBs are important as well because I usually like to have many peripherals.

My budget is between 1800-3000 Canadian, but I will spend a little bit over that if that is required to get something that is truly state-of-the-art.

A top-of-the-line computer is important to me right now, the best rendering speed is important for my projects and the highest visual quality in gaming for years to come is also very much so.

Well, I'm really unsure as to how this hardware will perform when it comes to 3D rendering, but it shouldn't be that bad. The quadro series was designed for 3D rendering, but not for gaming, so it won't be any good.

So I'll design based on your gaming needs. Though honestly, 3D rendering on it should work on it just fine.

I'll be back with the computer specs in a bit.

Now, this isn't the tip-top state of the art PC. Why?

Well, the state of the art CPU, the i7 3690x costs around $1100. + the standard mobo, add $300. That's $1400 off the bat. Then add a second GTX 580, for sli. That amounts to about $1000. So, after that you have about $600 to work with. You said you could go a bit over, so there you have about $1000 to work with for the HDD, case, OS, aftermarket cooling, PSU, etc. A bit hard to do. I think it's possible with a $4000 CAD budget at the minimum, but let me tell you - this PC is already a beast, and is still, pretty much, state of the art.

Now, with the listed parts, you can add a second GTX 580 for a total of just a bit over $3200. That'll GREATLY improve the performance, and the PSU can take it. Also, you can keep the single 580 and up to an i7 3690x for an extra $700 ($3400).

It'll also be a good idea to do a bit of research yourself. It's a really bad idea to order the world's best parts and not know how to build / use it.

I've tried Camtasia has difficulties recording 3d games it gets choppy (maybe less than 10FPS) most of the time and also flickers.

Fraps, i think it's better than camtasia, but the Files are so large (1-2GB for a 4-5 minute duration).
and it also gets down to below 10FPS but not more frequent than Camtasia.

I haven't tried Snagit but it's from Techsmith so i'm guessing it records like Camtasia.

Is there any better recorder out there?
Or of it's Fraps, how do i change the settings so that the recording will produce smaller files?

Take Fraps. Fraps is great for recording games, and most of the time gives very reliable framerates. It's waaaaay less heavy on your machine than camtasia, and thus will get you less lower framerates and lag. If you're having low framerates in Fraps, try rebooting your computer to clear as many processes and ram as you can, or try looking for the setting to see if its alright.

For your file size problem, since you've recorded with Camtasia, im pretty sure you'll have the Camtasia studio too, since the recorder is an add-on to that.
Take your fraps-file, put it into camtasia, and produce it as an mp4 or an Avi. Your file-size will be way smaller and you can then delete your original oversized recording :-).

Yes of course we can play the 3D games without installing it....This takes only few second and it can be played directly....We can copy a game folder to the CD and can directly from the CD..It runs fine when playing directly rather than installing in the computer...

What's the difference in building a cpu for gaming and building one for 3d rendering?

I've been browsing in forums and people have been saying that they were only looking for 3d rendering CPUs and not for gaming. Is there a difference between the two? (is a gaming pc more powerful than a 3d rendering pc?)

For gaming, usually, a quad core processor with high clock speed GHz is taken, and as for 3D rendering, you'll have to go for a processor with more number of cores, like the AMD hexa core processors or the extreme edition intel i7 processors, Both processors serve their purposes well. If its gaming you want then go for Intel Core i5 2500, or if its 3D rendering, then AMD Phenom ii X6 1100t, or if for both, then get an Intel Core i7 2600k.

With just three of you, with no programming experience or game development experience in general, you'll never finish one if you start from scratch like you want to.

Have you considered using a pre-made engine? There are many out there... Source, for example. This would be advisable over anything else, especially considering your statement that you have a greater strength in story development than in actual coding.

Doing something like that takes a lot of skill, time, and knowledge. I tried making a 2D game in highschool using Macromedia. Macromedia has awesome programs to use and are user friendly and easy to get the hang to. I would not try making a 3D game right away. Make some simple games, or take other games and try to emulate them at first. but to make a free-roaming 3D game by yourself, would literally take years. My suggestion would be to invest in Macromedia Flash. Flash is a great program that can be used by anyone, especially in your case being that you are knowledgeable in computers. You will have a lot of fun with it, i did.

What can I do with RealD 3d movie glasses?

I went to a 3d movie for the first time today. It was awesome. It was so much better than that Red/Cyan sh*t. I was really really impressed and I kept the glasses. So what can I do with them? I mean, can I edit videos to be 3d? Perhaps make games 3d by some filter or something. Are there any RealD ready videos on the net?

The 3d at the theater is polarized 3d which has been around since 1937 when it was invented. 3d movies since then have used polarized 3d for theaters. Now in a 3d movie you need two images for everything, one for each eye. Now the theater has to buy a special projector for polarized 3d. Then all the right eye images have one light wave and all the left eye images have a second different light wave. Then the lenses of the glasses block and unblock the 2 light wave so each eye only gets one image.

Now Televisions since its invention has not been able to do polarized 3d like movies at the theater. That is because it can not put out two different light waves. So the only 3d format it can do is anaglyph 3d that uses the red and blue glasses. That format uses color to block and unblock the images so anything that can produce color can do this 3d format.

So your glasses from the theater can not work with your television or monitor. That is disappointing but there is an alternative that tv manufactuers are turning to and that is field sequencial or eclipse 3d that looks just like polarized. Some Imax theaters use this format. It uses shutter glasses that use electricity to work. Each lens opens while the other one closes and they do this back and forth very fast. Then the image for that eye will flash on the screen while that lens is open. Nvidia already has this format for pc 3d games called gforce. In the next couple of years it will be made available for televisions.
