Dells aren't as great as everyone seems to think they are. The best thing to do and the cheapest (at least here in the US) is to build one yourself. You can build an awesome gaming rig for around 1200USD or 607.593 (that's pounds right?) This would include everything, the mobo, core2 processor, video card, sound card, ram, a WD Raptor HD. THen if you don't know how to put it all together you could find someone to and it would still be cheaper than buying a new one.

I need a modern looking, portable/semi portable, performance laptop?

D

I currently have an HP Pavilion DV7 laptop that I use daily and love, but its weight is starting to take a toll on me carrying it around for my daily purposes. So I'm in the market for a new laptop that I can make an easier use of, I'm looking for a laptop that is sleek and modern, (for example the styling of a macbook) portable enough that it will still be of decent size and weight, ( like I don't want a 17" laptop that weighs 10 pounds) and it is a necessity that this laptop has some power under the hood, I don't need to play super detailed games or anything, I have my DV7 for that,(there's some upgrades in this tank) but I'd like it to have plenty of processing power, and be ready to have loads of powerpoints and high quality photos and videos played and made on it. I'm not specific on a Mac or PC, I would prefer to stay away from the Macs due to their extremely inflated prices, but feel free to put whatever you see fit. Windows 8 doesn't bother me, oh but it needs good audio. So that's my list, and if anybody is willing to take on the challenge, it has begun after you finish reading this. Good Luck, and thank you!

Better brands for overall build quality and reliability are ASUS, Samsung, and Lenovo. If you want a laptop that does not weigh much, I would recommend an ultrabook. Ultrabook laptops are deigned to be thin and light, in order to acheive this however, they do not usually have dvd/cd drives in them and have smaller hard drives. Here are some models available at BestBuy ( I will list both ultrabook and non ultrabooks for comparison).

Asus - Ultrabook 14" Touch-Screen Laptop Model: S400CA-BSI5T14 SKU: 7683137 $679.99
Intel 3rd Gen core i5
6GB DDR3 RAM
500 GB Hard Drive
14" Multi-Touch Display
weighs 4lbs, and measures just 8/10ths of an inch thick.

Asus - 14" Laptop Model: Q400A-BHI7N03 SKU: 6775213 $699.99
Intel 3rd Gen core i7
8GB DDR3 RAM
750 GB Hard Drive
14" non-touch display
weighs just 4.2lbs and 1.3 inches thick

Asus - 15.6" Laptop Model: Q500A-BSI5N04 SKU: 7658047 $599.99
Intel 3rd Gen core i5
