What is a good speed, amount of memory, a good hard drive size, etc for an at-home-use laptop?
And what is a good price for this laptop and where to find a good price? What are good brand names?
What type of internet should I install on it?
I'm using it for school work, at home, but also will have music/pics.
Answer
Thing's to consider are:
What will I primarily use this for?
School, work, photo editing, website building, web surfing, games, e-mail / instant messaging.
All the above I recommend Windows XP (home or pro). Avoid VISTAHELL, the manufactures will still sell you XP.
Hard Drive 80gigs or greater.
Memory 2 Gigs.
USB mouse
Wireless devices are now mostly built in and provide you with FREE internet access in Hot Zones.
A LAN card for internet (ethernet) is built in for cable, DSL or Satellite. If you use dial up make sure that have a dial up modem installed, dial up has gone the way of the dinosaur.
Acer makes a nice inexpensive model in the $400-$600 range, its limited in its features and add-ons and expandability.
Sony Vaio's are nice and expandable.
Asus: after the processor and memory, Asus makes most of the internal parts for desktops and laptops.
For an outstanding retailer check out the link below. I build PC's, for business and personal use and zipzoomfly's prices are excellent, customer service I've only required one and they were there for me.
Dell - buyer beware.
Windows XP end of life has been extended by Microsoft until 2012. It works it's stable and SP3comes out in a few weeks Vistas, first SP will come out next month and will fix over 600 issues. Microsoft is hustling to get Windows 7 ready to replace Vista at the end of 2008 or start of 2009, if all goes well.
If you want a minimal learning curve and more stability get a Mac.

Which laptop-selling company provides the best customer support?
Nonny
I currently have a Dell and because of my terrible experiences with their customer support, i will not be purchasing my next laptop from them. One of my top priorities in my search for a new laptop is the quality of customer service. I'd appreciate specific examples rather than general statements, if possible. Thanks.

I have also read many reviews that the Genius Bar at the Apple Stores is the most knowledgeable of tech support offered in a retail store setting. However, their Tech Support is not cheap, unless you buy a 3-years Service Agreement from Apple.
If Tech Support is your top concern, you may want to look into a Mac. Apple is the biggest personal computer and have the volume to get the best suppliers. Well. Maybe not the suppliers who are best to their own employees.
If you want to stay with Windows, I'd recommend Lenovo because their Thinkpads are still better made than most. Sony as a corporation has lost a lot of business in TV, music players and game consoles and hasn't really put out anything special in computers.
