I'm thinking of buying this PC from HP that I will have custom built and was wondering if it will be a good PC for the money. The specs are:

Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Quad processor Q6600 (2.4GHz)
4GB DDR2-667MHz dual channel SDRAM (4x1024)
512MB NVIDIA GeForce 8500GT, TV-out, DVI-I, HDMI
250GB 7200 rpm SATA 3Gb/s hard drive
LightScribe 16X DVD+/-R/RW SuperMulti drive
Windows Vista Ultimate

All together this PC is 1,590.00 after savings and rebates. I was going to build one myself, but with no experience I thought it would be better to have someone build it for me. Is this a good deal and how good of a PC is it (I know it's pretty good, just want some opinions)?
I forgot to mention that it did come with a TV tuner. I'm not really a hardcore gamer, so the video card should last me for a while, but if I ever have the money to blow someday, I'll probably get a top of the line video card.

You forgot to mention one thing...what you will be using the PC for?

If you don't edit RAW uncompressed digital video/audio/photos or play the newest games, there is no reason for that processor or 4gb of RAM.

The video card is bottom of the barrel, the last generation 7600GT is much faster at $85.

A single 250gb hard drive at with a quad/4gb RAM system? That's completely retarded and idiotic considering 320gb Seagates are only $80 and 400gb are $100.

A single DVD burner?
They're only $30.

What power supply?
What motherboard?
Does this include monitor?

Anyway you look at it, this PC was put together buy a retard. It's all mismatched and bottlenecked. It has a quad and 4gb of RAM, yet a bottom of the barrel single hard drive and graphics card?

"Name Brand" builders use extremely cheap micro-atx motherboards, cases and power supplies. Probably something like this:

$40 Power supply

For a TOTAL of $995 if you built it to their specs yourself.


Do yourself a favor and decide what you really use your PC for and don't waste $1,500 for a mismatched PC. You can build a great gaming PC for $1,000ish. Or a killer media/home theater PC for $1,000 with a terabyte or so of storage.

And go for a full, top grade aluminum case like Lian-Li, not the cheezy steel/plastic crap that Dell and HP give you:

Building a Gaming PC?

What would you recommend?
Looking towards a mid range gaming pc that can at least run Battlefield Bad Company 2 on max graphics at around 40-60 fps
Price range would be around 600-750$ for everything.

if you are going to make a pc for gaming you are going to need a fast processor. and its going to have to be dual or more if you want it to run smoothly. secondly you are going to need a lot of rams, but that is very easy and cheap to upgrade or install. thirdly you are going to need a graphic card to run games at an awsome display and speed. ussually the least would be 1gb graphic or more to run some of the modern game real well. but after all that is placed you are now going to need a stronger power supply to run all this upgrades, or you will atleast need to set your bios to handle this.

there also other ways such as overclocking your system thru the bios
but it dosent work on all of them

oh and for the proccesor it is going to have to be atleast 2.0ghz dual core

There is some major info missing to judge effectiveness for gaming or value. At extremes, if the CPU is a Pentium D 820 Dual Core and the video is a 6200LE, the price (and system) would be horrible, while a 960 and an 8600GTS would be a poor price and a fair system. This sounds old enough that if it is at a store, they really want to get rid of it. It is a closeout and should be *way* under $500. If it is some person selling a used system, maybe half of that.

Yes a gaming PC is a LOT better then a PSP and in games as far as I am concerned, but it can cost around $1000 dollars for a gaming PC with dedicated graphics and the like.

My opinion is a specific high quality gaming PC beats PSP hands down... unless your factoring price...

Ok so it's a gamer you want......
MOBO: Gigabyte EX38 chipset or newer
CPU: Intel Q9450 or higher
RAM: (here's the debate: if you use a 64bit OS get as much ram as you can. If you use a 32 bit OS your stuck with 4 GB) I used a 64 bit OS Windows 2008 Server x64 and I have 8GB of G-Skill PC2-1000 Ram, Make sure your RAM has a speed equal to or higher than the FSB speed of the CPU it will help decrease the bottlenecking problem for the data speed from the CPU to the RAM
Cooling: I prefer fans over liquid, but it is truly about choice.
Hard Drive: 3 in total 1) 80GB Western Digital SATA II (for OS only)
2) 1.5 TB Western Digital SATA II (Docs, photos,
and anything else you want to put on it.
3) 1.5 TB Western Digital SATA II ( Movies, or
virtual drives for your games)
Graphics card: I am a ATI fan and love the new HD series cards, but make sure it has a minimum of 512 MB of RAM on board and a cooling fan. I have two GPU's on my system and I run 4 monitors.

Now what I just listed if you bought it retail would run you about 3500.00 to 5500.00. Dependent on your location. I built this system last year and I spent just over 1500.00. I can now buy all of this stuff for well under 900.00. USE EBAY!!!! I have since learned how to find great deals on EBAY and love it. But if you don't have the cash don't bid. Make sure you also have a good power supply in your rig, I used an Antech Quatro True Power 850 Watt PSU. It is not cheap but it is worth it to have the power there when you need it.

If you want to build it your self have fun, it is a great and rewarding experience to build your own system, but if you don't want to build it your self, send an email to jdptechnology@yahoo.com, they will build what you want and do it cheap. I know this for fact because they just built a system for a friend and it had a diamond viper Graphics card with 512MB RAM on the card and had a n ECS MOBO with a Q6600 CPU and 4 GB's of ram and memory card reader and a DVD burner for under 400.00. It is a sweet machine.

Im graduating from college and im expecting to get a gift from my mom. I have a really shitty laptop that I have been using for 4 years and I think she is going to give me a mac. Thats what she got my sister when she graduated. However, I dont really want a mac, I would rather build my own gaming pc. But how much would that cost?

Mac's cost about $1,000 so would all the parts fit in that price range?

I no longer build PC's for myself. A budget of 1,000 bucks/quid would be good though. Maybe even less. If/when it goes wrong, how much hassle is it? Not all faults are easy to diagnose. How much time do you want to spend on FF or diags? And then taking it all apart again to pull out the bit that needs to go back? Each time you take a machine apart and put it back together you also run the risk of introducing new problem(s).

Me? I am older and better off nowadays, so I am prepared to pay a bit more for covenience.
