Will they ever make a Star Wars Battlefront 3?
Cody
I wanted to know if Lucas Arts is gonna make a "Star Wars Battlefront 3"? I absolutely loved the first one and thought it was a huge success. I think that if they made a third one it would at least be up there with game of the year, i think it would be a great idea to make a third one.. I just wanted to know since i had heard some rumors that they might be making a third one. If a third one is being made and its not by Lucas Arts....then who?
Answer
On September 29, 2006, Computer and Video Games made an unconfirmed claim that Free Radical Design was developing the game.[2][3] In June 2008, Kotaku allegedly received information from a former LucasArts employee that Star Wars: Battlefront III was in the creation process.[4] On October 2, Activision Blizzard filed a classification with the Australian Office of Film and Literature Classification listing Star Wars: Battlefront III for the Nintendo DS with a PG rating(E10+ equivalent) for mild animated violence.[5] Also that month, Free Radical Design announced that they lost the rights to develop Star Wars: Battlefront III; the game at that point had been in development for two years.[6] On December 28, Star Wars character renders bearing a Battlefront III watermark surfaced from a laid-off Free Radical employee.[1]
On January 15, 2009, gameplay footage was leaked from a November 2008 Free Radical in-house showing of Battlefront III footage.[7] The footage was pulled from IGN after LucasArts demanded its removal.[8] Shortly thereafter, a former Free Radical Design employee said some of the technology Free Radical developed for the game, specifically the contiguous game environment from planet surface into space, "is dying with us".[9] In March 2009, a Pandemic Studios spokesperson refuted speculation that Pandemic had taken over the project, saying "the title seems to be up in the air."[10] Later rumors suggested Rebellion Developments had assumed development of Battlefront III.[11] After this, Rebellion Developments announced Star Wars Battlefront: Elite Squadron.
On May 14, 2010, Battlefront III lobbies were found on GameSpy, leading to speculation that the game would be announced at E3.[12] However, the game was not revealed at that time. It was rumored that Spark Unlimited's project with an as-of-yet unconfirmed publisher is Battlefront III.[13] On April 1, 2012, a user on the game journalist website Betagames discovered Star Wars models and textures buried in Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City's archives. PC Gamer's Tom Senior speculated that these could have been from Battlefront III.[14] On April 10, 2012, Spark Unlimited officially announced Lost Planet 3 as the game they had been working on, thus eliminating them as a candidate developer.[15]
